SPOILERS THROUGH TEEN WOLF 2.12

Okay, what I want to talk about specifically is how Lydia’s love for Jackson brought him back from the dead. That is some serious, magical, Beauty and the Beast **** right there.

The one question Jackson asks in the final scene, the only thing he needs to know before he dies, is if she still… and he can’t say it but he needs to hear her say it. And I imagine that when they were still dating, those three little words did not trip lightly from Lydia’s tongue. I would guess that she made him work for it, be attentive and complicit, affectionate and good. Then Lydia would tell Jackson she loved him. When they’re pressed together in bed, or after a spectacular game, or when she’s shaking and scared after that night in the school. He never says it back, but she doesn’t expect him to. She knows him well enough that she realizes he hoards this love and trust and that he feels like he doesn’t have enough to give back to her. That his questions and insecurities about his birth parents have made it impossible for him to express his feelings in any healthy sort of way.

But what truly surprised me was when Jackson turned into a werewolf. I had been hoping for that since last season’s finale, but I assumed that he would have to resolve his issues with his birth parents to fully get rid of the kanima. I thought that the issue holding Jackson back, making him wrong, was his parents. But it was Lydia. Things started deteriorating with Lydia after that awful night in the school. He knows that Lydia cheated on him - he’s kissed away her lipstick enough times to recognize the signs. And he’s not just losing her, but McCall is suddenly better than him at lacrosse, it’s his name being chanted after a game. Take away his porsche, and that’s everything Jackson is - gone. So he makes plans to become better, imagines a future where he doesn’t need anyone, and breaks up with Lydia. Rather horribly, but she cheated on him and has been a general drag and he just needs to move forward. But nothing goes to plan. Instead of gaining power, he loses it all to two vengeful psychos and reaches a place where he wants Derek to finish him. And it’s all okay, because Lydia still… loves him.

And that’s what truly amazes me. Because the kanima has no identity, and has issues in it’s past that don’t allow it to become a werewolf. And Jackson solves it all with Lydia. She gives him an identity, and even though he’s been dreadful to her recently she still loves him, and his issues with his past are resolved. Lydia gives Jackson someplace to belong, and someone to belong to. Someone who won’t use him as a tool of their revenge, that is. She turns the Beast into a prince, and a lizard into a wolf. All with the power of her love for this stupid boy.

TL;DR - Lydia’s love gives Jackson the identity he needed to change from a scaly kanima to a blue-eyed werewolf. It’s only after he makes sure she still loves him after the things he’s done that Jackson’s issues with his past are resolved. Their love is beautiful.
