It's because Katherine falls out of character. When she's with Damon, Bonnie, Klaus, Caroline, Matt, Tyler, Mikael, John, etc. she can pretend that she's Elena but with Stefan her humanity ruins her acting. Elena wouldn't look at Stefan like she misses him because they spend every day together so when he saw that look in "The Return" he knew it was Katherine.

Well said, Danielle! That's all so true! Stefan brings out the best in Katherine and that's her humanity, and in return Katherine does the same for Stefan!

Danielle, I think you are so right! And that cap proves it. I didn't catch that before (how she is looking at him so longingly). But I def see it there. And now that you have me thinking about it, when Katherine is pretending to be Elena with Stefan it's like she can't follow all the way through. She always quits her act halfway through and starts laughing or smirking or says something sarcastically funny.
