The writers really understood what a 12 year old child's joys and fears are and wrote about them in both a comedic and relatable manner.

15 Most Nostalgic Nickelodeon Shows From The 90s
Doug Made Preteen Life A Little More Bearable
In 1991, the series Doug took kids by the hand and showed them that adolescent life wasn’t so bad. Kids got to see a more comical look at what the life of a 12-year-old boy was like as the titular Doug Funny dealt with school, crushes, friendships, and the ins and outs of everyday life.

Doug made fans on the verge of being teens feel like they weren’t dealing with things alone. Along with fun stories, the series introduced an amazing art style with some very creative characters to match, making it a fun watch for kids and adults of today.

Best 90s Nickelodeon Cartoons, Ranked
Doug
Centering on the growing pains and adolescent lives of Douglas "Doug" Funnie and his best friends Skeeter and Patti Mayonnaise in the small town of Bluffington, the aptly named classic '90s series Doug was groundbreaking at the time for focusing on and animating the mundanity of real life. The show tackled weighty topics such as bullying, rumors, and self-esteem, along with just the banal regularity of day-to-day childhood. Conceptualized by Jim Jinkins, the cartoon depicts the eponymous 11-year-old as he attempts to navigate life in a new school which was heavily inspired by the animator's own experiences growing up in Virginia as a child; he based many of the uniquely designed and colorful characters on real people in his life.

Throughout the show, Doug desperately tries to blend in with his classmates but since he possesses such an extraordinary imagination he can't help but stand out. Audiences watched as Doug escaped the stress of the real world by finding comfort in his journal, which he used to document his many everyday experiences and included the fun appearance of his alter ego Quailman. Doug ran for four seasons at Nickelodeon before changing homes and heading to ABC, but it nonetheless remains one of the latter network's most top-rated and inspiring programs.

The 100 Best Kids TV Shows Of All Time
71. Doug
Of the original Nicktoons, Doug was the most grounded — and the one with the most heart. It was easy to fall in love with Doug Funnie, who wrote in his journal every day, oftentimes about his adventures with his friend Skeeter (honk, honk!) and his feelings for Patti Mayonnaise. Doug both dared to be weird (who can forget the rock band The Beets and their hit single “Killer Tofu”?) while also relishing in the mundane aspects of adolescence: schoolwork, bullies, best friends, and unrequited crushes. With a literally colorful cast of characters, including Doug’s plucky pup Porkchop and artsy sister Judy, the show immediately left a lasting impression on everyone who came of age alongside Doug and the other residents of Bluffington. — CG

The 20 Best 90s Cartoon Characters Ever Created
Douglas Funnie (Doug)
While many children would like to believe that they are ordinary and merely fit in with the rest of their peers, there is almost always something extraordinary about them that forces them to stand out in one way or another. For Doug Funnie in Doug, his vivid imagination and distinct sense for what is good versus what is wrong is what makes him unique. He is very aware of his situations and feelings, and he chooses to write about his life in a journal. Doug deals with a lot over the course of seven seasons, but he tries his best to see the good even in the darkest times.

10 Best '90s Cartoons Everyone Forgot About
Doug Is Underrated Today but Was a Hit in the 1990s
Doug is among the longest-running animated TV shows of the 1990s, spanning 7 seasons and airing from 1991 to 1999. It was one of the first original animated series produced by Nickelodeon and a major hit, which helped cement the network as one of the main children's television channels of the 1990s and the 2000s. It was an animated sitcom about a teenage boy named Doug Funnie as he navigated the challenges of growing up, like dealing with the school bully Roger Klotz or with his crush Patti Mayonnaise.

Both entertaining and educational, the diverse cast would often get into adventures that were resolved with a positive and instructive message. Beyond the great characters and storylines, the show also had an impact on popular culture with its catchy theme song and fashion statements -- it's often considered one of the reasons why colorful baggy clothes became a fashion trend in the 1990s. However, it wasn't widely syndicated back then nor made available for streaming more recently. The fact that Disney bought the rights to Doug from Nickelodeon after Season 4 resulted in an irregular distribution and promotion, which influenced its current status as an obscure 90s cartoon.
