Nope, saw AtS prior to BtVS. Even if I hadn't, the show was so talked about that it was hard not to know his vampire status.

I don't think it's a big deal. You find out in S1 pretty quicky that Angel is a vampire and back in the day I didn't start watching Buffy till S2 but everyone at school would talk about him being a good vampire. It was one of those things people just talked about and if you watch the show they would always show that he's a vampire when he's fighting with Buffy and others talking about it. In some of the openings they also showed that Spike was a vampire, Willow was a witch, and Oz was a werewolf *shrugs*
