I think they would have been a bit closer, but not as close as they were by the end.

I think that Elizabeth would have been able to keep some of Peter's bitterness at bay and he would have been more receptive to Walter and have more patience with him in the beginning.

I wonder if Peter might have followed a more conventional path - gone to school and maybe worked with Walter instead of becoming a con artist. That assumes that Walter would not have been committed to St. Clares - or at least not until Peter was an adult. I think maybe if Elizabeth had lived he might have been more stable.

I think Peter would have found out eventually, one way or the other. It wouldn't surprise me if Elizabeth told him, because I don't think she ever really accepted the alternate Peter as hers.
