S4 Walternate was a nicer guy. He lacked the bitterness of having Peter taken away from him. He and Walter actually became friends and he also developed a warm relationship with Olivia.

Even when he was evil I felt he definitely had legitimate reasons to be vengeful

Walternate in all the seasons was a fairly well-rounded character, especially being one that only had a few appearances. While I still think he was basically a "bad" character, he did have good traits, which made the character believable as well as fun to watch.

I am shocked that him and Elizabeth were still together, given his ego and his life basically consisted of all work like our Walter

We never met the "our" universe Elizabeth, but I got the impression that the alternate Elizabeth was a bit more independent. She had more of her own life to live and her own interests and so was more able to deal with a more-or-less absent husband.

Walternate was a SOB, but he did have some morals in that he insisted they would not experiment on children.

We met the "our" universe Elizabeth in Peter and Subject 13.

I'd say he had more than a few appearances.

A fairly well-rounded character? Although he was fun to watch, S3 Walternate was a louse. He abducted Peter back to the alternate universe, switched Olivias by kidnapping and locking away and experimenting on and attempting to kill ours, while sending Altlivia over here.

He also had Alt-Broyles killed, trapped people in amber, tried to destroy our universe, and was cheating on his wife. Among other things.

If alternate President Obama had found out what he was up to, he would have been fired as U.S. Secretary of Defense and prosecuted and imprisoned. I believe William Bell was straddling the fence by protecting Walternate somewhat because he did not want too many people 'over there' finding out about 'over here'.
