I tend to disagree, infact on rewatches I warm up to him and constantly am surprised by how much of a scumbag our Walter comes across as in his earlier days

Walternate had his moments. And I think he did love Peter in his own way. And you're definitely right about Walter. The Walter before he was sent to St. Claire's - while he was working with Bell - could probably match Walternate for cold=heartedness and a ruthless and often unethical devotion to his science.
