Classic Comics Saturday
Note: Today's comic has language in it that might be a little much for 's PG-13 rule. To be safe, I'm only linking to it. --- Those ’70s Comics: 936 Inspired by episode 513 - “Your Time Is Gonna Come” Comments: I remember well drawing the fourth and fifth panel of the second row. I was experimenting with the program I (still) use to make the comics (Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 ... amazing). I enjoyed making that visual although I recognize now the internalized misogynistic language Jackie and Donna use in this comic -- as taken from the show -- and how they view Annette through that same lens, also taken from the show. Comic!Donna, unlike show!Donna, tries to get Jackie to realize she’s holding Kelso to the double standard he held her to once he got back from California. --- Star Vector Brush Set PS7 --- Colleen, thank you! __________________

Classic Comics Sunday
--- Those ’70s Comics: 937 Inspired by episode 513 - “Your Time Is Gonna Come” --- Comments: On the show during “Your Time is Gonna Come” (5x13) and “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You” (5x14), Jackie realizes that she’s still grieving the loss of her relationship with Kelso and the pain he caused her. Along with this realization comes the clarity that Kelso is her past and Hyde is her present, the person she’s in love with. Hyde ultimately accepts this fact and (seemingly) trusts in Jackie’s current love for him. T7S should’ve allowed this two-episode arc to be the extent of the Hyde/Jackie/Kelso non-triangle triangle. Nothing more was necessary character-wise. Instead, the Hyde/Jackie/Kelso non-triangle triangle becomes a focus of Jackie and Hyde’s burgeoning relationship. This served the purpose of plot and a season-ending cliffhanger rather than character. The writers didn’t trust that Jackie and Hyde, like Eric and Donna during S1-S4, could have enough self-generated conflict between them to make interesting stories from -- without bringing Kelso in as an external element of pressure. The show itself and hundreds of fan-written stories prove that Jackie and Hyde don’t need Kelso to make their dynamic interesting. In the comics, I have Donna (among other characters) voice (through dialogue and thoughts) how ridiculous the idea of Jackie having current and actively romantic feelings for Kelso is at this point of T7S makes no character sense based on the first half of season 5. By writing the comics’ version of season 5, I realized what Jackie’s true conflict is by the end of the show’s season: choosing between Hyde and not-Hyde. A renewed romantic relationship with Kelso isn’t truly in contention. He’s used to explain the feelings and belief created in her by Hyde’s choice to sleep with the nurse as a) an act of revenge for a transgression she never commited b) a passive-aggressive breakup “letter” to Jackie, and c) to ensure Jackie would never take him back -- because he feared he’d go back to her out of how much he loves her and, thus would get hurt by Jackie choosing Kelso over him yet again. Hyde’s choice made Jackie believe that he could walk away from their relationship without a second thought. Unlike Kelso, who consistently chased Jackie (in a variety of ways, some quite disturbing), once Hyde is done, he’s done. Jackie feared this meant Hyde doesn’t love her, or love her enough, to fight for her and their relationship. She’s completely wrong, but her fear is understandable. Hyde’s defense mechanism, as Kitty eloquently says in “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” (7x03), it to push people away before they can push him away -- or hurt him deeply by abandoning him or other means. He shuts down emotionally, and had Jackie (and the show’s writers) remembered what Hyde teaches Jackie about himself in “Cat Fight Club” (2x15), she would’ve understood that the opposite of her fear is true. “That’s cool.” “Whatever.” His seeming indifference is to conceal how much he cares. --- Colleen, potato! Classic Comics Saturday
--- Those ’70s Comics: 938 Inspired by episode 513 - “Your Time Is Gonna Come” --- Comments: I added the aspect of Jackie suggesting to Donna and Annette they play chess. Hyde is so afraid of being hurt (thanks, Edna and Bud) that he can’t recognize the underlying reasons for his insecurity. Kitty’s dad turns out to be a dirty old man on the show, and unfortunately he’s also one in the comics. An eighty-year-old (going by the actor’s age when he was on the show) ogling an eighteen-year-old. For “the laughs”. He was smitten with Annette’s body, which led to him being smitten by death. (Check out that word play! Bob would be proud.) --- Complete Tree Brush Pack __________________
