Comments: I wanted to give more depth to this scene -- to acknowledge Jackie’s depth. She grows significantly as a person while in her relationship with Hyde (just as Hyde does while with her). In the show’s version, Hyde invalidates this growth with his choking-on-the-hot-dog bit.

In the comics’ version, the act is purposeful and passive-aggressive because his insecurity about Jackie’s feeling for him vs. Kelso have been triggered (understandably, in this case, because of Jackie’s evident jealousy of Annette).

I also counter Jackie’s possessiveness of Kelso with her desire to have quality and safe time with Hyde. This is to demonstrate a comparison for the intensity of her active and present feelings for Hyde vs. the lingering and faded nature of her feelings for Kelso.

Comments: This is one of those comics I would (and want to) completely write differently today. The main joke is about Annette’s “bounciness,” which to me -- at the time -- seemed simply cartoonish. Underlying the humor, however, is T7S’s sexist and objectifying gaze toward women. I’d grown up with that gaze being the norm, both in media (e.g, movies, TV shows, comic books, etc.) and people of all ages and genders, so I’d internalized it.

For many years I didn’t, and couldn’t, recognize that gaze for what it actually is. I’d already made (too) many comics before my awareness about that particular truth grew and changed. When I look back at comics such as these, I cringe.

But the last panels explore Hyde’s insecurity about Jackie’s love for him and reaffirm his love for her. They also demonstrate further his season-5 passive-aggressive decision-making, which I did to lay the proper groundwork for the choice he makes toward the end of the season (i.e. sleeping with the nurse). If Hyde was going to take such an OOC action (since I wasn’t yet veering far from T7S’s plots), I wanted it to make more character-sense in the comics than it does on the show.
