Classic Comics Sunday
--- Those ’70s Comics: 763 Episode 509.5 - “A Jackie Burkhart Christmas” Inspired by episode 510 - “The Crunge” --- Comments: Hyde is sabotaging himself by acting on his insecurity, but he realizes he shouldn’t have left Jackie’s cheer practice to go after Kelso. This self-awareness won’t prevent him from acting out in the comics the same way he does on the show (since I still hewed close to the show’s plot at the time), but it will allow him to self-reflect, own his behavior, and be worthy of Jackie’s trust and forgiveness again. Today’s comic shows, too, where Jackie’s romantic interest lies and reaffirms that Kelso’s priroity wasn’t / isn’t her but himself. --- Colleen, Kayla, thank you! __________________

Classic Comics Saturday
--- Those ’70s Comics: 764 Episode 509.5 - “A Jackie Burkhart Christmas” --- Comments: Jackie unintentionally drops a subtle hint in the eleventh panel about what’s going on with her. She hasn’t told Hyde about her mother’s on-going absence, and getting presents from Kelso gives her some respite from the torment she’s experiencing. If Donna gave her presents (that Jackie actually would like), it would be the same in Jackie’s eyes. Hyde, however, has no idea what’s going on underneath the surface. He can judge the situation only by what he sees. Unfortunately, Jackie’s word isn’t good enough for him because of their history (Hyde and Jackie’s, Jackie and Kelso’s) and how his understanding of people.has been shaped by his childhood. Conversations Jackie and Hyde have on the show tell us that he spends time breaking through the belief system her parents taught her, that money and presents equals love and a person’s value. Again, because Hyde has no clue about what Jackie’s suffering at home, he continues his “teachings” without realizing that doing so, in this moment, is making Jackie feel the opposite of loved. And what Jackie needs most right now is to feel loved and for someone trustworthy to get her out of her increasingly unsafe homelife. --- Colleen, thank you! Quote:
Lulu, thank you, too! I'm proud of Jackie's burn on Eric. __________________

Classic Comics Sunday
--- Those ’70s Comics: 764 Episode 509.5 - “A Jackie Burkhart Christmas” --- Comments: Jackie and Hyde’s lack of proper communication screwed them over repeatedly on the show and, ultimately, allowed the season 8 showrunners to break them up permanently since the S5-S7 showrunners used it in season 7 to manufacture so much of the conflict between Jackie and Hyde. Today’s comic shows the effects of that lack of communication. Jackie hasn’t told Hyde that her mom hasn’t come home, that she’s having to deal with the aftermath of her dad’s crime and imprisonment on her own, or any of the other related issues. Which means she can’t explain that Kelso’s daily presents are a bright spot in the hell that her life’s become. Hyde can’t interpret correctly how Jackie’s feeling because he can only go by what he knows and what he sees happening. He (mis)interprets the motive of Jackie’s acceptance of Kelso’s gifts and their effect on her, according to his knowledge of her history with Kelso and his experience with her pre-dating. He then acts according to the hurt feelings that brings up, which hurts her. Jackie doesn’t understand Hyde’s behavior since she doesn’t understand his insecurity about her feelings for him and how accepting Kelso’s presents happily and without question brings that help. He’s tried to get her connect the dots on her own with what he tells her, but he needs to be direct. She, in turn, feels hurt by his seeming aloofness and lack of care -- which actually indicates how much he does care -- and so she tries to get him to prove how much he cares about her by testing his knowledge of her (i.e. how much he pays attention to what she says and does). She wants to be significant to him, especially now when her parents have made clear she isn’t a priority, and the message he’s unintentionally sending is that she isn’t all that important to him. He, of course, being the seventeen-year-old, emotionally wounded, inexperienced-in-relationships person he is, believes Jackie is simply testing him. He doesn’t (yet) look past his own hurt to recognize the subtext that lies beneath her behavior. He’s capable of it. We’ve seen it in the comics already during this original episode I’ve written -- but that was before Kelso put his get-Jackie-back plan into action and triggering Hyde’s fear of losing Jackie to him (again). (Oh, and two of the comic panels are animated. ) --- Quote:
