Classic Comics Saturday
--- Those ’70s Comics: 772 Episode 509.5 - “A Jackie Burkhart Christmas” --- Comments: Hyde would never play the kind of game Kelso proposed in so public a way, but he wanted Jackie to understand that not only does he know what counts about her but also that a) he cares about (aka loves) her and b) she doesn’t have to keep holding onto the secret(s) he believes she’s keeping from him (and everyone). Jackie and Hyde’s innate connection to each other is made far more interesting (to me as a writer and reader / watcher) because of how their individual characteristics affect their relationship dynamics. The tension and conflict between them is shot through with such a deep love and respect (when the characters are written correctly and consistently) that Jackie/Hyde’s stories are so emotionally satisfying and enjoyable to write (in comic form or prose). --- Complete Tree Brush Pack Folded White Paper --- Colleen, thank you! --- Those ’70s Comics: 773 Episode 509.5 - “A Jackie Burkhart Christmas” --- Comments: In an earlier comic, Jackie confessed to Donna that she plays her own music while Steven sleeps in order to influence him subconsciously. It worked (to a point). The lyrics of “Circles” by Captain & Tennille capture perfectly Jackie’s point of view about her relationship with Hyde at this point in their relationship. The title of the song fits Hyde’s character, too, considering Hyde is the one who introduced his friends -- and Jackie -- to the circle. __________________

--- Those ’70s Comics: 774 Episode 509.5 - “A Jackie Burkhart Christmas” --- Comments: Kelso’s belief about scented candles’ power over (only) women isn’t quite accurate, apparently. Fez wanted to use that power to compel Nina to act for his will, not her own. This is the Fez of “Everybody Loves Casey” (4x26), whose (sexual) needs make him ignore a woman’s personhood (even a woman he clearly loved and made sacrifices for, i..e. Rhonda). But in an unexpected turn, Fez’s plan works on Nina’s ex-boyfriend instead. Kelso might think that was cool -- if only because his theory about scented candles is (semi-)proven. At least someone’s shirt came off. --- Quote:

--- Those ’70s Comics: 775 Episode 509.5 - “A Jackie Burkhart Christmas” --- Comments: A little reminder that Jackie’s mom never came home after Jackie’s dad was put in prison. This comic also demonstrates and acknowledges (through Kitty and Donna’s conversation) the growth and change in Jackie’s character. For many comics before this one (and before this original episode), I’ve had Hyde give Jackie a different POV and experience of what love means The change in Jackie because of it is profound (as Kitty says). T7S does lay the groundwork for this change in Jackie’s perspective the first half of season 5, which pays off in “Whole Lotta Love” (5x16). I wanted, however, to depict concretely a significant and specific stage in this shift. T7S often has the characters toss off a line of dialogue or two to tell us what’s happened off-screen in between episodes. For Jackie and Hyde, those lines hint at an even deeper and more nuanced relationship than we get on-screen. The comics allow me to write stories around those tossed-off lines, to dramatize more character and relationship growth than T7S had time / chose to give us. --- Christmas PNG pack II. --- Colleen, thank you! __________________
