Comments: As much as I love Jackie and Hyde’s romantic relationship, I wish T7S had written Hyde closer to the version born in “Prom Night” (1x19) and depicted through the end of season 4 self. In season 5, he becomes even further emotionally removed, to the point where his feelings for Jackie seem ambiguous at times.

Many episodes in season 5 show us that Hyde does, indeed, love Jackie, and that he’s protective of her. His apparent ambiguity likely strengthens due to how strongly he does feel about Jackie. It’s part of his Zen self-protection mechanism, but it allowed T7S writers to manipulate his character later on to act truly ambiguous toward Jackie in season 7.

Hyde’s stronger external aloofness with Jackie, without enough private-time scenes with her where he’s anything but aloof, make -- for me -- their S5-S7 relationship less emotionally satisfying than it could have been.

His arcs with her should’ve ultimately led to a growing comfort with his feelings toward her, internally and externally. Their scene in the circle during “I’m a Boy” is a great example of how the show could’ve depicted this growth, his easy affection toward Jackie, and his happiness because of Jackie without writing Hyde too sappy or sentimentally.

In the comics, I delve deeply into Hyde’s feelings and thoughts. It’s an advantage of the art form over TV, those thought bubbles. "Join Together” (6x02) gives us a scene where we hear and see how Hyde is affected by Jackie vs. how he actually responds to her -- but it’s the only one of its kind. It’s used both to show us Hyde’s conflict and for laugh, but it wouldn’t work as a consistent device for Hyde during the series. That would take away all his subtext and be lazy writing.

Comments: During season 5, one of Hyde complains about Kelso is that he gives Jackie presents all the time, as an attempt to woo her back to him, but we see this happen only once -- in “Whole Lotta Love” (5x16) -- for her birthday (this is before Jackie breaks up with Hyde; the jellybeans don’t count).

I wanted to show Hyde’s complaint in action so his growing insecurity about Jackie’s loyalties makes even more character-sense. The show does the bare minimum to justify it, not Kelso’s obvious attempts at sabotaging the relationship but Hyde’s doubts about Jackie’s love and fidelity toward him.

Comments: I wanted to show why Hyde had a reason to feel as insecure as he does about Jackie and Kelso in season 5. As written in the series, post-”Babe, I”m Gonna Leave You” (5x14), Hyde clearly continues to resent Jackie shouting, “Get off my boyfriend!” at Kelso and hasn’t forgiven her for it. He does to her what he tells Eric not to do to him in “Eric’s Stash” (2x12):

Hyde: You know what, man? You either forgive me for what happened with Donna, or you don’t. But you can’t keep throwing that in my face.

Hyde carps on Jackie’s outburst to her from the time they reconcile to the time he finds her comforting Kelso on Donna’s couch in “You Shook Me” (5x22). Silently, he indicates that her performing a certain sexual act is the only way he’ll stop. He tries to control her by giving her an order not to spend time with Kelso alone. When she disobeys it, he assumes the worst and and retaliates.

None of this behavior is okay. None of it fits with the depiction of Hyde’s character since “Prom Night” (1x19), either. He acts out of proportion to what’s shown or spoken about on-screen, and he acts like someone Jackie should get out of a relationship with ASAP. Although the truth is concealed by jokes, he’s monstrous -- especially since he does no self-reflection, prioritizes his fear of losing her forever instead of empathizing with the pain his betrayal caused her, and ultimately comes to believe he’s injured party during the aftermath of their breakup.

If I had to write that Hyde in the comics, he’d probably have an “accident” with a woodchipper, and real!Hyde would reform from the remains. (Which I basically do, but the woochipper is metaphorical instead of literal. Or, to put it in religious terms, he voluntarily goes to purgatory to cleanse himself of his sins through hard work.)

But I chose, rather, to depict how and why Hyde gets to the point of feeling so insecure about Jackie’s love for him that he transforms into someone almost unrecognizable. I provide his thoughts so we understand his feelings and behavior. I make clear he sleeps with someone else both to hurt Jackie in retaliation and as a way of ensuring she’d never take him back -- because he knows his own love for her would drive him back to her.
