I really like season 2. I thought it was kind of dramatic how everyone acted like they would never see Steve again when he went to find his birth mother. It wasn't like he was leaving forever. Everyone looked so sad. Brenda cried and I don't remember her and Steve being close

Indeed. I posted that moment on the first page. They really became a gang. Brenda also said "We love you, Steve." They were not particularly close, but they always had each other's back. That's why I did not buy when he in S4 told her "I am your brother's friend, not yours!" Sure, he could have said that because they were hanging out via Brandon, but still, they shared a lot as friends.
