Exactly, Dylan and Kelly were so much deeper. Like Dylan told Brandon "I know you love her Brandon, but me and Kelly, we’re connected in a way that you will never understand ... ever."

I always took that line to mean their actual, present-day connection. There's a nod to the episode before, but we already know what Dylan believes about their friendship. And their more-than-friendship.
