I think if Kelly had stayed with John Sears, it would've probably led to a similar situation...but in this case, Dylan, Brandon, and Steve would've been there to take John Sears out.

John Sears would have got wasted by any of the three guys. Kelly is vulnerable - Brandon said this once in season 7 in Face-Off episode.

He was a jerk, alright. Even Steve wasn't that nice to Kelly initially after they broke off but he became genuine and good towards her after season 3 onwards

Ok, I checked about John Sears, and Kelly totally liked him (she said in Greek to Me that she had a major crush on him for awhile), and they spent the night at his father's house drinking champagne or something, and then the day after he told everyone about it and also made a lot of stuff up. So he was directly working on ruining her reputation for about a year. He actively spread rumors about her.
However, what is weird is that Steve did not know about it. Kelly checked with him at the KEG party what John told him about her. Actually at the beginning of the epi, Steve was surprised they knew each other at all. __________________
