Writers Guild leaders jostle efforts to end strike By Michael Cieply Published: January 31, 2008 LOS ANGELES: Closed-door talks aimed at settling the three-month-old strike by movie and television writers have been jolted in the past few days by the actions of some prominent guild leaders. Phil Alden Robinson, best known as the writer and director of the film "Field of Dreams" and a member of the governing board of the Writers Guild of America West, has publicly called for a toughened bargaining position. He expressed wariness over modeling any prospective deal on a new contract reached between production companies and the Directors Guild of America. His critique was posted Tuesday on a Web site called United Hollywood and linked to the guild's site, and came despite a news blackout and an earlier request by the guild's president, Patric Verrone, that members show restraint during ticklish informal talks that might lead to a resumption of formal negotiations. That development came amid some reduction in the good will from a Friday peace-making dinner that matched Verrone and his chief lieutenant, David Young, with Leslie Moonves, chief executive of CBS, and his labor relations chief, Harry Isaacs. Moonves has learned that Young, on the day of their dinner, invited Wall Street analysts to hear a negative presentation about the company. In a letter dated last Friday, Young asked CBS investors to attend a Feb. 5 session in New York at which guild leaders promised to discuss what they say said were dimming prospects for CBS, and to point out what they saw as "conflicts of interest in the governance" of the company, because of its overlapping ownership with Viacom. In his Web post, Robinson criticized provisions in the contract between the Directors Guild of America and the producers. He urged writers to tell their negotiators - "loudly and clearly" - of their displeasure with some provisions, including a plan to pay a $1,200 fee for the right to stream ad-supported television shows on the Internet for a year. "It's my strong conviction that if an unaltered DGA deal were put before our membership for a vote today, it would fail resoundingly," he wrote, referring to the directors guild. Robinson's critique was highlighted on the guild Web site alongside a link to a letter in which Screen Actors Guild executives derided the directors' deal as being an inadequate model for actors. The Screen Actors Guild's contract with Hollywood producers expires June 30. In an interview Wednesday, Robinson said he did not believe that his post had violated the news blackout, because he was not on the guild's negotiating committee and had received only general updates on the talks. "I just want to make sure the committee is hearing from those people I'm hearing from," Robinson said. A guild spokesman also said Robinson did not break the blackout or guild policies, and added in an e-mail message that members had reacted to the message "with many different opinions." The post set off alarms among negotiators. One writers' representative, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he could not believe that a board member would post such a detailed discussion without approval from others in leadership, but added that he would be "disappointed" if such approval had occurred. Production company representatives, who requested anonymity, said the comments had added to the difficulty of making a deal with a guild that appeared torn by conflicting demands. Moonves; Robert Iger, chief executive of Walt Disney; and Peter Chernin, the president of News Corp., have been among those deputized to speak for the companies. Guild leaders have been joined by Alan Wertheimer, an entertainment lawyer who represents many writers, including J.J. Abrams of the TV series "Lost" and Ron Bass of the film "Rain Man". On Wednesday, Gilbert Cates, chief negotiator for the directors, said he did not believe that criticism by leaders of other unions would endanger approval of his guild's contract, which was endorsed unanimously by the negotiation committee and national board. If a deal with the writers is not reached soon, the Academy Awards ceremony could become the scene of labor action, Hollywood-style. Robinson and Jeff Hermanson, the writers' strike coordinator, recently met with leaders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to hear their case for allowing the Oscar ceremony to proceed without interference by strikers. The guild officials told academy leaders they believed the strike might be settled by Feb. 24, when the ceremony is scheduled for broadcast by ABC. If not, they said, the ceremony would be picketed.
