A year before The Notebook. I think.
I can't remember if it debuted at the 2004 or 2003 Sundance Film Fest... |

"the united states of leland" would have to be one of my very favourite movies; very though-provoking.

I love how Ryan is just so minimal in the role of Leland. He makes such small gestures, and generally has very little body movement throughout the movie. There's a real sense that he is inhabiting the role. I think more than any other film he's made, USoL is the one that really clarified what an exceptional actor he is. I think he was probably 21 or so when he made it, and the performance is just so incredibly nuanced, and so beyond anything his contemporaries are doing, with the possible exception of Jake Gyllenhaal. If the film itself had not been such an indie, and Ryan such a relative unknown at the time, I'm sure it would have won a slew of awards. It really is a brilliantly realised piece of film, and all the supporting cast, even Chris Klein (who I think is fairly 1 dimensional most of the time) give very real, admirable performances. But it's really Ryan's film, and he really is mindblowing in it.
