This movie really proves that Ryan can be anyone in his movies. He was so believable as this character.

The one thing that I found confusing in USOL is....he seemed "normal" at times...his character I mean, but was the character supposed to have some mental disability or something...?

I thought he was autistic, but I'm not sure if it was just how Ryan played him or if he was written to be that way as well..

Yeah there was something about the character and I don't know if it was clear as to whether or not he was "autisitc" like you mentioned Unfamous Loser or if he had some mental disability...
Anyone know for sure? |

I loved Ryan's portrayal in this film, he brought a real sadness to the character. I really learned to like Leland and how he saw and felt about the world. I actually made a music video to it if you're interested:
It'll Be Alright - The United States of Leland It's in the movie vid section. I don't think Ryan was supposed to have a mental disability, unless you count like...schitzophrinia? Possibly? The boy he killed however was autistic I believe. __________________

That's a great video, thanks so much for posting!
I don't know if he was supposed to have a mental thing, it's just in the beginning, it's like he can't understand that he did something wrong...you know what I mean? |

Well it was more like that's just how he saw the world. He didn't think that Ryan had anything to look forward to, and by killing him, he was helping him almost. He did realize afterwards though that he had done something bad. But by that point, the feelings where he felt everyone's sadness were so strong that they probably consumed him during the act of killing. Then once the "sadness" was gone (Ryan) he was able to think a little more clearly and realize what he'd done.
That's my interpretation anyway... And thanks Glad you liked the video. __________________

I watched Leland yesterday again, and after watching it, I'm still trying to figure out why Leland kills Ryan...but when I thought about it, I think it was to put "Ryan" out of his "misery" in a sense, Leland looked at Ryan and knew for some reason that Ryan would always be talked to and looked at as some dumb kid etc...so it was like he was setting him free.
I don't know that it makes sense. I re read what I typed but it's still missing something... |
