How is it possible to have a witch/vamp hybrid? Are they turned differently? Or are they special cases because Abby stopped being a witch after she turned.

They explained it because they're witches like Kai. They don't have magic of their own. So they have to suck it out of others in order to wield it. As vampires they have an endless supply of magic cause they suck it from themselves. Apparently Lily turned them into vampires and they were going to the U.S. in 1903 to murder the Gemini coven. It's all complete bullshiit and feels like they pulled this explaination out of their ass in order to try to tie this season together in some way.
