Smallville S8 S&S #18: C'mon Kent, the JLA awaits!

Season Eight Description
Now in its eighth season, this modern reinterpretation of the enduring Superman mythology and its classic characters continues to blend realism, adventure and emotion into an exciting action series. With realistic portrayals and award-winning, state-of-the-art special effects, SMALLVILLE stars Tom Welling (The Fog, Cheaper by the Dozen movies), Allison Mack (The Ant Bully, Opposite Sex), Erica Durance (House of the Dead, The Butterfly Effect 2), Aaron Ashmore (Veronica Mars, The West Wing, upcoming The Christmas Cottage), Cassidy Freeman (Finishing the Game: The Search for a New Bruce Lee, Cold Case), Sam Witwer (Battlestar Galatica) and Justin Hartley (Aquaman, Passions). From Tollin/Robbins Productions and Warner Bros. Television, Smallville airs Thursdays (8:00–9:00 p.m. ET/PT) on The CW.

This season, Clark Kent (Welling) moves closer than ever to embracing his calling as the iconic superhero he is destined to become. Spending less time in his hometown and more time in the big city of Metropolis, Clark will encounter new challenges and new faces – both friend and foe – as he begins his career at the Daily Planet. Characters from every corner of the DC Comics universe will pay visits, including Plastique, the heroine-to-be with an explosive personality; Maxima, the seductive, intergalactic goddess; and Superman's most formidable adversary, Doomsday, the only character who is able to kill Superman. This season will also feature an appearance by DC Comics' time-traveling Legion of Superheroes, who return from the future in an episode to be penned by renowned comic book writer Geoff Johns.

Last season came to a stunning conclusion with a confrontation between Clark and his longtime nemesis, Lex Luthor (former series star Michael Rosenbaum) under the frozen columns of Clark's arctic Fortress of Solitude. Years of secrets came to a head as Clark's former friend finally discovered the truth about Clark's alien heritage. Clark's world soon came crashing down as the fortress crumbled in an icy avalanche, leaving both characters' fate a mystery.

Lex's moment of truth didn't come without a price. He murdered his father, Lionel (former series star John Glover) for information about the legendary Traveler. Clark also had to defeat Brainiac (recurring guest star James Marsters), who had banished Clark's Supergirl cousin Kara (recurring guest star Laura Vandervoort) to the Phantom Zone and attacked both Chloe (Mack) and Lana (former series star Kristin Kreuk), leaving them both in catatonic comas. Though Brainiac's demise ultimately lifted their trances, Chloe was soon arrested for hacking into federal databases – just as she was about to respond to a marriage proposal from Jimmy Olsen (Ashmore). Meanwhile, in a tearful, videotaped good-bye, Lana told Clark that she was leaving Smallville and his life forever, encouraging Clark to fulfill his destiny – something he wouldn't be able to accomplish with her in his world. While one chapter of his life seemingly came to an end, another was about to begin. With fewer commitments tethering Clark to the farm, Lois Lane (Durance) asked him to apply for a job opening at the Daily Planet.

Season eight begins a few weeks after the Fortress' icy collapse, as a LuthorCorp arctic excavation team investigates Lex's whereabouts. Members of the Justice League reunite in the search for Clark, who has been rendered powerless by the fall of the Fortress. As the season unfolds, Clark's new position at the Daily Planet will mean working across the desk from Lois. The two will be forced to team up to cover Metropolis' most pressing goings on. Sometimes it's Lois herself who becomes Clark's biggest obstacle, especially when he's on a deadline. But with Clark and Lois thrust into such close proximity, sparks are bound to fly, and feelings will start to surface that come as a surprise to both of them. At the same time, Clark begins to discover the balancing act he must perform as he explores his dual identities as both reporter and superhero.

Even with Lex gone, the Luthor mansion isn't vacant for long. Its newest resident is the beguiling Tess Mercer (Freeman), who, according to Lex's written instructions, has been placed in charge of LuthorCorp and all of its projects, including oversight of the Daily Planet. Tess proves to be as inscrutable as she is cunning, and is an enigmatic new presence in everyone's lives. It won't be long before Tess' attention turns to Clark. But Clark is wary of her intentions, and as the layers of her past are peeled away, new mysteries surface. Through it all, Tess' resolve remains unshakable – to find Lex Luthor, as she is convinced he is still alive.

Clark isn't the only one who will face formidable challenges. Oliver Queen (Hartley) returns to make Metropolis his home. He finds himself at a crossroads, forced to travel through some dark terrain – especially when demons from his past are reawakened. Oliver ultimately begins to question his role as a superhero, just as Clark is embracing his own.

With a new fiancé and puzzling new abilities that intrigue her as much as they frighten her, Chloe decides to turn her attention toward helping others. She takes over where Lana left off and reopens the Isis Foundation to provide counseling for those with meteor-powered abilities. She soon finds just how tricky the meteor-powered can be. Chloe's life is further complicated when she meets Metropolis paramedic Davis Bloome (Witwer). A tireless public servant, Bloome strikes up a fast friendship with Chloe. Soulful and mysterious, Bloome has demons of his own. He's troubled by large gaps of time that he can't remember, and as he comes closer to the answers, he must confront his own worst fear – that at his core he is pure evil.

The series, based on DC Comics characters, was developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (both of Spider-Man, Shanghai Noon movies, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and is executive produced by Kelly Souders (Stuck) & Brian Peterson (But I'm a Cheerleader), Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer (both of Control, Natural Selection), Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola (latter three from One Tree Hill, The Bronx Is Burning, Norbit, Wild Hogs). This description was copied and pasted from KryptonSite.com. Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

- The magazine also reveals what Clark's surprise is for Lois: He's taking the job at the Daily Planet, right acros from her desk. "It's about the Superman identity emerging as Clark Kent tries to maintain a normal life — or the appearance of a normal life."
- "The cameraderie as they work side-by-side that everyone loves from the DC Comics and all the Superman lore is going to come to fruition this year," Souders continues. When Smallville comes back, the Super Friends reunite to search for Clark Kent, who went missing in May's season finale after tussling with Lex Luthor at the Fortress of Solitude. He'll start this new chapter by gathering Aquaman and Black Canary to rescue Clark. Alan Ritchson and Alaina Huffman will reprise their roles, as will Phil Morris, whose Martian Manhunter also appears in the opener, titled "Odyssey." Source: TV Guide Online

Also, regarding Lois and Clark at the Daily Planet: "There will be a lot more comedy this season, courtesy of those new adventures Lois and Clark will be embarking on."

- Roles now being cast, in addition to the role of Bette, include the following: Security Agent, Young Cop, Medic, Tommy, Clerk, and two CSI's.
#07/12 - This episode will explore Clark's first day on his new job and his teaming with Lois. The character of paramedic Davis Bloom makes his first appearance in this episode, and he interacts primarily with Chloe. "Plastique" does indeed involve Bette Sans Souci, the character from the DC Comics universe. In this version she is a "15-year-old street kid" who is injured in an explosion, and Chloe asks her to move in. Contrary to some reports that Chloe will be serving time for a while... in actuality, Chloe will no longer be incarcerated by the time this episode happens. Justin Hartley (Oliver) and Aaron Ashmore (Jimmy) do not appear in this episode. Bette has a connection to Level 33.1 or something very much like it. And beneath his charismatic, easy-going demeanor lies a brooding sense of isolation and insecurity. When he begins to delve into the haunting mysteries of his true origins, a darker truth begins to emerge, one of blood and serial murders, one of survival and utter destruction - one in which he is forced to confront the true evil inside of him." UPDATED 8/20/08: Oliver's poisoning causes Lois to revisit her feelings for him as she visits him in the hospital.
UPDATED 7/29/08: After Oliver is poisoned, Chloe calls a paramedic she knows (cue Davis Bloome) for what might be the first meeting between Davis and Clark.

Episode #8-04:
"Instinct"

Air Date: 9th Oct. 2008
From E! Online's interview with Darren Swimmer: "Maxima is the intergalactic goddess who needs to mate, and humans just don't fill the bill. The way that we portray her, one of her powers is skill at making herself irresistible to the men who come upon her—and Clark will not be immune to that. There's going to be one episode, but we're hoping to do more than one. Charlotte Sullivan is the actress we cast, and she did a really great job, she's really interesting."
- Although Lois is offered her old room back, Swimmer told E! that she and Clark will not be living together - for now.
UPDATED 8/20/08: TVGuide.com has revealed that actress Charlotte Sullivan has been cast in the role of Maxima.
- It is very likely that Shelby the dog will be making a return appearance.
- After finding the letter, Jimmy asks Chloe why she's never said those things about him, and Chloe tells Jimmy that his insecurity about Clark is wearing thin.
- Chloe does some investigating for Clark to try and find out who Maxima is.
- Tess goes to an unexpected source for help in finding Lex.
- Maxima uses her powers to seduce Clark, and Lois walks in on them in an elevator.
- Clark offers Lois "her old room back" at the very empty Kent Farm.
UPDATED 7/27/08: Yes, it is indeed Maxima in this episode.
UPDATED 7/25/08: It sounds like "Melissa" was indeed just a ploy to throw us off, and the intergalactic Maxima is indeed the one to appear in this episode.
- Justin Hartley (Oliver) and Sam Witwer (Davis Bloome) do not appear in this episode.
- The resurfacing of the "Fever" letter might lead Clark to realize what he's missing out on.
UPDATED 7/21/08: Both Jimmy and Clark learn about the letter Chloe wrote to Clark way back in the episode "Fever."
UPDATED 7/16/08: An update, thanks to S.A.M.: A super-powered character named "Melissa" has her eyes on Clark. They kiss and he tries to resist. Originally casting notices for this episode called for "Maxima," a character from the DC Comics universe of characters, but this was changed in the casting notice... we're assuming for either legal or creative reasons.... unless, of course, they're just trying to throw us off track.

Episode #8-05:
"Committed"

Air Date: 16th Oct. 2008
UPDATED 8/5/05: From TVGuide.com: Clark and Lois will be "forced" to make like lovebirds as they investigate some strange goings-on involving a crazy guy and a Moment of Truth-esque lie detector "game." In the course of this, Lois and Clark find themselves engaged in a smooch.
UPDATED 7/28/08: Someone is abducting young couples (including Chloe and Jimmy), and Lois and Clark pose as a couple themselves to investigate.

Episode #8-06:
"Prey"

Air Date: 23rd Oct. 2008
UPDATED 8/20/08: Clark and Chloe find themselves on opposing sides when a serial killer starts wreaking havoc on Metroplis in this season's sixth episode. Clark suspects Davis/Doomsday is the culprit, but Chloe's having none of it. Strengthening Clark's resolve: D/D just so happens to blackout whenever there's a new murder.
UPDATED 8/16/08: The four series regulars in this episode will be Clark, Chloe, Jimmy, and Davis Bloome.
- Clark and Chloe disagree on an issue relating to the violent things that are happening around Metropolis.
UPDATED 8/15/08: Roles now being cast for "Prey" include a Guard, Paramedic #1, Paramedic #2, Jesse, Lost Girl, Crying Girl, Chief of Police, Randy, Mary, Distraught Mother, Thugs, Boy, Robber, Bartender, and Bloody Teen Boy. Sounds pretty violent, doesn't it?
Episode #8-07:
"Identity"

Air Date: 30th Oct. 2008
Darren Swimmer tells E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos: "There's an episode where Jimmy will think he sees something and starts connecting it to Clark, and Clark has to dig himself out of it. That starts Clark thinking that maybe it would be wise to have a secret identity. He starts embracing the idea that there's someone out there saving people. He's not denying that completely anymore, he's just not ready to tell anyone it's him. And that makes this year very exciting for us."
- Sam Witwer (Davis Bloome) is not in this episode, but all of the other series regulars will be present.
- Casting notices have gone out for the role of this episode's bad guy, "Sebastian." They're also looking for a Mugger.
UPDATED 8/21/08: Jimmy takes a photo of a red and blue blur, and Clark is determined to keep him from finding out the truth about who has been saving the day.
Episode #8-08:
"Unknown at the current time"

Air Date: Nov. 2008

Episode #8-09:
"Abyss"
This episode contains flashbacks.
-Younger Chloe and Clark kiss in the barn amoung others.
The barn scene with a young Clark and Chloe isn't the only Clark-Chloe blast from the past. Other sequences from previous seasons of Smallville will be revisited, and the scenes being revisited were all popular among "Chlark shippers."
Air Date: Nov. 2008

Episode #8-10:
"Title unknown right now"

Air Date: Nov. 2008
Chances are good that this will be the Jimmy and Chloe wedding episode, and it has been said that the event will be a "bloody mess."
- Comments from "Legion" writer Geoff Johns also imply episode #10 will be a big event: "I can tell you with confidence, the season they have planned is easily the most ambitious to date," he said in a forum posting. "There are so many twists and turns. And episode 10. Episode 10 is INSANE. My episode is now 11, so it's going to be a hard act to follow, but I'll give it my all. I have to say too, that if they pull off where they're taking Doomsday...I mean, I didn't understand where they were going when they announced that Doomsday had a human alter ego. But it's freaking cool. As hell. And fans of the comics are going to be blown away when everything is actually revealed. It's really pretty spectacular."
Episode #8-11:
"Legion"

Air Date: Nov. 2008
Writer Geoff Johns has revealed that "Legion" has been pushed back to episode #11, and he has this to say about "Legion" on a comic book forum: "They are absolutely, 100% on point with the Legionnaires and their relationship with Clark Kent. I can say you'll see an appearance by one of the Legion's better known enemies, but I can't reveal who just yet. More information to come when I can talk about it."
8/28 - [Exec producer Darren] Swimmer confirmed an appearance by the Legion of Superheroes (not to be confused with the Justice League, although Swimmer also said they would love to have a storyline for Justice Leaguer Wonder Woman on the show). Regarding the Legion: "It's three superheroes, Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy and Lightning Lad-although we might not use those names-on a mission from Superman in the future, who sends them back to help make things right." Source: Kristin on E!Online
Popular comic book writer Geoff Johns is writing the 9th episode of Season Eight, which will introduce the Legion of Super-Heroes to the Smallville mythology. No details have been revealed except that the characters will stay true to their origins and will indeed come from the future. Source: KryptonSite

Spoilers for season eight!
  • Season 8 To Start With Ten Episodes
Thaks to Mr. Video, we have gotten word of The CW's current plans for the Fall season, which will start Smallville Season 8 off with a bang.

Expect ten episodes to run between the premiere on September 18 and November 20. This fast schedule should allow for a lot of momentum in the first half of the sesaon.

Keep in mind these plans are subject to change
  • Executive Producer Darren Swimmer has revealed to E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos that there might be some romantic sparks between Clark and Tess later in the season. "Tess is definitely interested in him—and who wouldn't be?" Swimmer said. Swimmer also declared himself to be a fan of the actress playing Tess: "Cassidy Freeman is also doing an incredible job. Nobody could fill Michael Rosenbaum's shoes completely, but she's carrying the mantle as best as I can imagine anybody doing it."
    - Kristin's interview also reveals that Laura Vandervoort will be in "either episode #8 or #9," and that there are talks to incorporate Darkseid. The interview also revealed that there will be no Michael Rosenbaum at all in Season 8 - though we're seriously hoping that's a misquote.
    - Lana will now be back "right in the middle of the season" which may confirm our rumor.
    - Kristin Dos Santos' rival at Entertainment Weekly, Michael Ausiello, reveals that apparently Lois will declare her love for Clark at some point in the first seven episodes.
  • Question: Do you have any new Lois/Clark Smallville scoop? -- Trish
Ausiello: At some point within the first seven episodes, one of them will confess their love for the other. (Hint: The one doing the confessing is not pictured to the left.) Also within that time frame: Jimmy will ****** *** Clark's ******.
  • Hey, Kristin! You seem to be ignoring Smallville lately. Any juicy scoop to share?
Just had a long, juicy talk with new Smallville executive producer Darren Swimmer, and he told me that there will definitely be a Chloe-Jimmy wedding, but that it does not go according to plan. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's going to be a bloody mess.
  • Laura Vandervoort revealed at the 2008 FanExpo in Toronto, Canada that she will be returing to Smallville for an episode to wrap up her storylines. Her episode shoots in October, which means it will probably land somewhere between #9 and #11 of the season. Sadly, Michael Rosenbaum has given no indication that he will be returning, and he has revealed that he is currently in negotiations for a film role. (Source: TheTVAddict)
  • Chloe says yes to Jimmy's proposal, setting the stage for a possible wedding later this season. Source: K-site
  • Fan fave [Justin] Hartley is sticking around for at least 12 episodes as Green Arrow and his alter ego, Oliver Queen. He'll have a mysterious connection to Tess Mercer, a shady new character (played by Cassidy Freeman) who is searching for the missing Lex. [...] Also new is Sam Witwer, who plays David Bloome, an EMT who becomes a brutal menace by night. "Part of his mystery this season is not only revealing what he's doing, but also what his origin is and where he comes from," executive producer Kelly Souders teases. Source: TV Guide
  • Get ready for a Jimmy/Chloe/Doomsday triangle. Source: The Ausiello Files
  • This season's theme is "double identities," Souders says. "It's about the Superman identity emerging as Clark Kent tries to maintain a normal life - or the appearance of a normal life." To that end, he takes a job at the "Daily Planet," right across the desk from Lois Lane. "The camaraderie as they work side-by-side that everyone loves from the DC Comics and all the Superman lore is going to come to fruition this year," Souders says. "The two of them are thrown together in some unfortunate situations for Clark. She becomes a little bit of an obstacle to him saving the world, when he's on a deadline." [...] Kristin Kreuk will not be back for the season opener, since that episode is already chock full of Justice Leaguing goodness. Source: TV Guide Online
  • 07/27 - According to exec producer Brian Wayne Peterson, [Kristin] Kreuk's five-episode stint as Lana will kick off in early November. "She'll come back at a very inopportune time for Clark," he hints. In the meantime, while Ms. Lang's off "giving Clark some space," the man who would be Super will be growing closer to Lois. "They'll be working together this year at Daily Planet ," Peterson says, "and some friction is going to come out of that." Not to mention several winks to classic Superman lore - beginning in the season premiere. Teases Peterson: "There might be a phone booth moment between the two of them." [...] "We definitely touch on [Chloe's] feelings for [Clark]," he says. Adds fellow EP Todd Slavkin: "They've been best friends for a long time, and Clark would never get in the way of her pursuing her happiness. But oftentimes, feelings have a way of creeping in. That's all we'll say." Source: The Ausiello Files
  • The CW just confirmed that Justin Hartley (Green Arrow/Oliver Queen) has been locked in as a series regular for the upcoming eighth season! According to the show's rep, Justin's storyline will focus on Oliver's past and where he comes from as opposed to his Green alter ego. Source: Kristin on E!Online
NEW CHARACTER
David Bloome (Sam Witwer): In season eight, Clark will face his ultimate challenge with the appearance of the legendary, unstoppable destroyer Doomsday, who appears on "Smallville" for the first time. As comic book fans know, Doomsday is notorious for being the only character in the DC Comics universe to have killed Superman. David is an EMT who becomes a brutal menace by night. "Part of his mystery this season is not only revealing what he's doing, but also what his origin is and where he comes from," executive producer Kelly Souders teases. Part of what excited the four of us to bring Doomsday into the show was the fact that he has no previously established Earthly alter ego in the comics. Davis Bloome will be very different from the Doomsday we've seen in the comics. Especially at first. We thought it would be interesting to see the human side of a character that had very little humanity in the comics. [...] Doomsday did kill Superman in the comics, so Clark better be on his toes. According to [Sam] Witwer, his newly introduced regular character, Davis "Doomsday" Bloome, starts out as a good guy (who has designs on Ms. Chloe herself), but before too long his romantic quest is interrupted by waking nightmares that bode not well for Chloe, Davis, Clark or Metropolis at large. [...] I can tell you is the character's name is Davis Bloome. He's a paramedic in Metropolis, he's very good at his job, and he was raised in the foster system. He went from home to home-he's this survivor character, and he's kind of an outsider. But he's a really nice guy, really cool guy. [...] He's brought into the story when he strikes up a friendship with Chloe on the show. Chloe is dating Jimmy Olsen, so he doesn't want to step in-he's too nice of a guy to steal her. Because who wants to steal from Jimmy Olsen? Sweet little red-haired kid. Anyway, David starts losing large amounts of time. He's blacking out. He doesn't understand why. [...] Eventually this character will embark on a quest to find out why these blackouts are happening, and what he discovers is horrifying for the character, and hopefully horrifying for the audience. [...] There are some really cool ideas around [the fact that he's a psychotic supervillain]. What do you when you find out you are the opposite of what you ever wanted to be? If you found out you were a murderer, and you didn't know this, what would you do? By the end of the season, in Davis Bloome's case, he's going to be trying to be the same guy, but he's...distressed. [...] I'm going to be there the whole season.
NEW CHARACTER
Tess Mercer (Cassidy Freeman): Drop-dead gorgeous. Roughly 28 years old. She's determined, sexy, vengeful and has super-strength. "While Lex is away, she is in control of his estate and rules it with aggression. She's had intellect and the confidence all her life, though it's obvious she's had some training from Lex as well. But as much as Lex has helped fortify her power, he is also her biggest weakness. She harbors an undying devotion to Lex, claiming he saved her life a few years ago. She carries out his wishes with coercion, force, seduction - anything to get what she wants. And no one can resist her beguiling ways. Even Clark Kent. She doesn't remember anything before the day she met Lex. Once she realizes her previous life is buried below the surface, she's desperate to dig it up." Source: Ask Ausiello @ TV Guide
05/10 - The series is currently casting for series regular Tess. She will first appear in a scene with Clark. The lady is trespassing on the Kent Farm. As Clark and she chit chat, she reveals that she is in Smallville to look over the Luthor Mansion since Lex has disappeared. Tess tries to blackmail Jimmy so she gets some answers about Lex. Source: SpoilerFix.com
Season 8: Who's Staying, Who's Going?
Staying on as regulars: Tom, Erica, Allison, Aaron.
Returning for plot contininuty: Laura (one epsiode) Kristin (five episodes)
Unsure: Michael (might guest star for an episode)
Departing permanently: John Glover

No worries

Have we had any more news on that Tess character? Do we know how long she's on for?

Actually I think Tess might be the one character we know the least about this season. She's a mystery.

I'm really intrigued by her.. hopefully she's as interesting as she sounds from the description. She doesn't appear to be in many of the episode spoilers though.. which is kind of wierd.

No problems

So i take it that Doomsday ends up crashing the Chimmy wedding and starts slicing and dicing the guests? Hmm maybe they might leave the wedding for the mid season cliffhanger?

If Doomsday crashes the wedding and stops Chloe from marrying Jimmy, I'll be happy

I don't care what they do as long as Chloe don't ruin her life and marry him I'll be fine for this season. Thats all I ask writers

It's sad that i'd rather see Chloe with a psychotic murder than Jimmy...

I've hated every Jimmy Olsen and this one's just the worse. lol
Ugh I know they want Clark and Lois at the DP but I'm still not going to let it go that Chloe's not working their. Instead they have her working in some bullsh-t job Lana created. Just disgusted with that LOL
