More on the James Bond issue...

I was watching a show on the International Channel yesterday, and they were discussing the upcoming James Bond movie. Apparently, the producers want an actress from Bollywood to be the Bond girl, and it looks like it is definite. I knew that Ash was asked to do it, but the show said that they are selecting from Ash, Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra and Preity Zinta. I hadn't heard about that until I watched the show, and I'm hoping that it's a reliable source. [img]smilies/lol.gif[/img] I guess we'll just have to wait and see. If that's true, then we at least know that there will definitely be an Indian actress in the movie.

In last week's India Abroad, there was an article about the upcoming Bollywood film festival on Turner Classic Movies. I forgot to post the information here, but I just found another article about it online.

Oh, crap! I don't think I get Turner Movie Classics, although my cable did just get reorganized... [img]smilies/frown.gif[/img]

While not strictly a "Hindi Movie," I did see the somewhat racy Monsoon Wedding last night, and thoroughly enjoyed it (if only because the roles of women were semi-empowered, not surprising given the fact that the movie was made by a woman). I definitely recommend it.

Monsoon Wedding is wonderful, vintage Mira Nair. Nair's never afraid to empower the women and show both the beauty and the ugliness that exists in Indian culture.

I'd recommend seeing Salaam Bombay, it's like the ugly stepsister of MW. Dark and gritty, it isn't a love affair with a city (like MW and Delhi) as much as it is a rape. It was Nair's first big film.

And as long as we're talking about Bollywood-Western fusion, I'd also recommend Deepa Mehta's Fire and Gurinder Chadha's Bhaji on the Beach and Bend it Like Beckham.

-Ash has been at Cannes. I haven't seen any pictures of her, but she's been mentioned as attending benefits/parties.

There's a pretty good interview with Gurinder Chadha in *B!tch* magazine. She talks about BILB and her upcoming movie. She's doing a Bollywood version of Pride and Prejudice. It sounds interesting.

Okay, I still haven't watched Fire (will watch it this weekend), but I did see Bollywood/Hollywood, which I absolutely loved! It was hilarious - and I loved all the references to Hindi movies, having seen quite a few of them.

The portrayals were dead on, in my opinion.

I'm done with classes in a week though, and I plan on curling up with many, many Hindi films, does anyone have any good new ones to recommend that are available for renting?

Mmm. Saw Bhoot the other day. An interesting and freaky movie. I thought Ajay Devgan was pretty good in it. Heh. And it was nice to see that Indian cinema is taking a step towards horror films rather than the usual.
