Yeah, I’m not sure why BD even bothered to write claims. Bette never beat her kids or almost choked BD to death like Joan did or even made her wear the same two dresses for a year at school like Christina went through.

if anything, Bette’s relationship with her daughter was no different than any mother daughter conflicts. I read both books.

Bette also had a child who was mentally handicapped and had to have her live in an institution which is sad. But she had her have home visits all her life.

At that time, children were institutionalized very quickly if there was anything "wrong" with them. I mean, just think of Rosemary Kennedy who was freaking lobotimized because she had "inappropriate" behaviour issues.

It's weird how kids react to clothes. I grew up poor and my clothes were a real issue for me. We got hand-me-downs from cousins who were about 10 years older than us, so everything was out of fashion. Either that or we wore clothes my mother made. To me, it was so humiliating. My brother, who was two years younger, had zero issue.

I wasn't the least bit fashion aware but my excuse as a kid was it was during the decades when bad fashion was in general when you look back. Plus I didn't buy my own clothes so I had not much choice. I became fashion conscious at 15.

But two dresses for a whole year of school which got torn or stained was overkill for abuse!

That must be as true of "normal" parents like the ones I had as it would be for the Bette Davises, huh? Surely famous parents are no worse or no better, on average, than non-famous parents.
