yes this season has been my fav for Peter as well. They are really helping him to end his run on high note. I hope the writing and level of quality of the eps keeps up for the rest of the season.

by contrast, peter capaldi’s tenure as the doctor has seen, er, 12 12-rated episodes, a third more than the total that the series had been given in the nine years before that, with 2015’s series nine alone given seven 12 ratings, nearly doubling the number of higher-rated episodes that the series had received in the 10 years before. Now that’s a darker series.

In case you’re wondering, peter capaldi’s 12-rated episodes are as follows: Dark water, last christmas, the magician’s apprentice, the witch’s familiar, under the lake, before the flood, the zygon inversion, heaven sent, the return of doctor mysterio, knock knock, oxygen, extremis.

^ I didn't know either. That can probably help you with which episodes you can let your son watch.

I would like to say that some early episodes of Doctor Who, and I mean from the beginning could be considered dark and I also don't think that it was just light before Peter either.

That's true, but I also think it wasn't completely light and fluffy, especially with the Weeping Angels and Midnight, which is an episode I really like.

In a very early episode the First Doctor was going to bash an injured caveman's head in, before his companion, Ian, stopped him.

There were also complaints about the violence in The Deadly Assassin.

And, I swear we keep hearing about Doctor Who being too scary for children, but that's just a general one, and not just about the classic series.
