Eighteenth-century English farmhand Jedediah Buxton never learned to read or write, but as a young boy he developed an uncanny aptitude for mathematics. His passion drove him to perform complex calculations--all in his head. He once paced out the area of his hometown, converted the results into square inches, then reduced his findings into microscopic units equal to 1/48 of a square inch, which he called square "hairs'-breadths." Another time he mentally calculated how many grains of wheat it would take to fill a basket with a volume of one cubic mile, converting the results to bushels, pecks, and pints.

A magazine article about Buxton caught the attention of the Royal Society, and while Buxton was in London in 1754 to catch a glimpse of the king (he was a great fan of the Royal Family), this prestigious group of intellectuals invited him to put his mathematical wizardry to the test. They challenged him to such tasks as doubling a farthing--an amount less than a penny--139 times. He not only calculated the correct answer, but also converted it into pounds sterling, coming up with a figure that was 39 digits long.

Before Buxton returned to his quiet existence farming in the English countryside, his Royal Society hosts took him to a performance of Richard III, where they found out how unflinching his devotion to numbers could be. He paid no attention to the drama onstage, and when they asked him how he liked the play, Buxton commented that the music during onstage dances distracted him from counting the steps of the dancers. He had, however, been able to make an accurate count of every word recited by the show's leading man.

jero, I tried to post that picture in my last post, but it wouldn't show up so I deleted it. Thanks for posting it and for identifying whose back the tatoo is on, too.

I heard Spanish coming from the TV in my bedroom and went to check it out.... It was "Outbreak" - dubbed in Spanish. Somehow the movie about the Ebola virus sounded worse in Spanish.
