Yep, I caught myself up on the latest issue of Angel AtF and the finale of Spike AtF over Thanksgiving break. I didn't like this past Angel issue (#14?) as much as the last few, but I'm still interested in seeing where all of this is going in the final few issues.

Angel: Not Fade Away

So my next book is indeed an adaptation of the amazing, nay, sacred, final episode of Angel.
The original script was by Jeffrey Bell and Joss Whedon, and is being adapted for comics by uber-scribe Scott Tipton(who certainly knows his way around an Angel script). Joining me on the art chores as colourist is the very talented(and Irish!) newcomer, Ciarán Lucas. We hope to knock your socks off.
Do we hope to expand upon certain scenes that left the viewers gagging for more?
You bet yer sweet bippy we do. I'd hate to do something like this that was purely a straight re-telling of the episode. So worry not, we'll try and squeeze whatever extra content we can in there! Its a very dense episode, so we'll only have a limited amount of instances to elaborate on existing scenes, but we'll do our darndest to make those instances well worth it.

FC • 32 pages • $3.99

1)So it looks like Angel is a vamp again.

We still need to see if this cover is a mislead and how the last three issues of ATF plays out but assuming this cover isn't a mislead,I was expecting a re-vamping.Although I won't lie and say it isn't a little disappointing to me since I think it would of been much more ballsy, daring and interesting to keep him human over just reverting back to status quo right after After The Fall ends.Again, that's assuming we take the cover at face value and without knowing the events of ATF #15-17.

2)Sounds like they are back from hell.

I like how the covers we've seen for issues 18 and 19 only feature Angel thus hiding the fates of everybody else. It's perserving the mystery of which of our characters do or don't make it out of ATF.

3)Based on the cover, it looks like we could be dealing with the events of Buffy Season 8 #21 with vampires being revealed by Harmony to the world and vamps becoming cool. The poperizzi seem demonic though so maybe it has nothing to do with what is coming up in season 8.If L.A. is out of hell though than the Angel story is no longer as self contained and I could see a nod to the larger events of the verse happening now, sort of like having slayers in ATF was a nod to the events of Buffy.

Angel: Blood and Trenches #1
John Byrne (w & a & c)

In Europe, war ravages nations, but a greater darkness than human conflict calls Angel back across the ocean from his distant home in America—bodies of combatants found drained of blood, and signs of an ancient evil once more abroad in the world. Writer/artist John Byrne tells an untold tale of Angel’s WWI exploits!

Joss Whedon, Brian Lynch (plot) • Lynch (w) • Nick Runge, Stephen Mooney (a) • Alex Garner (c)

Angel’s After The Fall storyline is back in the crosshairs in this third hardcover volume of the latest Angel series! But as usual, the problem everyone expects turns out to be the least of their concerns! Experience all the action, drama, deception and demonic humor you’ve come to expect from Brian Lynch (Spike: Shadow Puppets), joined this time with artists Nick Runge and Stephen Mooney in the exciting continuation of Angel: After The Fall!

Man, these comics are brutal about killing off characters (but then, the series was too). Poor Groo.

I guess my suspicions were right

RIP Connor

All I can say is Bravo Brian.

I didn't want Connor to die.I was dreading it coming since I've been suspecting it was on the way the last three weeks or so.Just something was giving me the feeling that this was going to be the big death in issues 15 after thinking about Brian's blog post from a while back.Connor dying would fit the bill perfectly. So I was expecting this and hoping I was off base.Sadly I was not.

But as much as I hate losing Connor who has become a favorite of mine,I have to give Brian props because he handled it so very well.It was given all the weight and power this deserved. And the emotion.Connor dying in Angel's arms and their last words to each other tore at the heartstrings. This is the worst loss Angel has ever suffered and probably ever will.No parent should have to watch their child die and right now,I just have know more words.

Brian has entered Joss level of tearing our hearts out.Connor's death here ranks up there with Buffy's in The Gift. And that final splash page echos Buffy's body being surrounded by her loved ones in The Gift to a tee.

I'll post more thoughts on the rest of this issue tomorrow probably because I need more time to digest. This whole issue was a slam dunk though.

And yes,Groo is killed too.

So I haven't read the issue yet, but I made the mistake of spoiling myself for this issue, and . . . gah. I can't believe they killed Connor! I can see, story-wise, why they would do it, especially now that Connor and Angel are finally on such solid terms, but still. As a Connor fan, the guy's already gotten such a raw deal, and Angel's gone through so much to keep him safe, that it breaks my heart to see him end up another casualty of the merciless death trap that is being an Angel character. Still, I'm not generally one to get pissed off at the deaths of characters I like so long as it adds something to the story, and with this show, I usually end up thinking it does, so I'll try to get over my sadness for the loss of Connor's character and see where all this goes. And at least I'll go into the issue prepared for what's to come.
