Inside Princess Kate's Visit to N.Y.C.
By Caitlin Keating @caitkeating 12/06/2014 AT 08:20 PM EST

It might be Princess Kate's first visit to New York City, but one plan she has while she is here involves a longtime passion of hers – helping children in need.

On Monday morning, the expectant mother – who is traveling to the U.S. with her husband, Prince William – will be visiting the Northside Center for Child Development in Harlem – and people there couldn't be more thrilled.

"We are so excited," Nina Fenton, the center's director of development, tells PEOPLE. "She is tremendously supportive for children's mental health. Her coming to see us means a lot."

The organization, which has been around for over 60 years, provides education and mental-health services to over 3,000 New York City children and families.

Kate, 32, along with New York City First Lady Chirlane McCray, will be there for over an hour and will spend quality time with some of the families that use their services.

"They will then go to our holiday gift-wrapping party," says Fenton. "We heard that the princess loves gift-wrapping, so we are going to put her to work."

She will also be going to a classroom to help children with special needs decorate picture frames.

"The teacher in that classroom has no words for how much she is looking forward to it," Fenton says. "They will create and make some great work."

The kids, who are between 3 and 4 years old, are too young to know exactly who Kate is, but they do know one thing.

"They think a princess from the movies is coming. They said she lives in a castle and that they want to share their toys with her," says Fenton.

Prince William and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (aka Kate Middleton) arrive outside of The Carlyle Hotel on Sunday evening (December 7) in New York City.

The royal couple are on a 48-hour trip to the States, which will include a visit to President Obama at the White House in Washington, DC.

Duchess Kate and Prince William arrived slightly late on their commercial to JFK Airport and made their way to the Upper East Side hotel, where they were greeted by many guests who were kept far back by the NYPD.

The royals are being welcomed by the city – including the famous Empire State Building!

Kate Middleton, Prince William Land in New York City For U.S. Visit: Pictures
Celebrity News Dec. 7, 2014 AT 6:00PM
UPDATED Dec. 8, 2014 AT 2:50AM By Rachel McRady

They have arrived! Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Prince William and Kate Middleton landed in New York City's JFK airport on Sunday, Dec. 7 a little after 4:30 p.m. ET.

Shortly after, the parents of Prince George arrived at the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan's Upper East Side. Pregnant-again Middleton wore a burgundy Seraphine coat over her dress on the chilly winter day.

"It's good to be here," William told the hotel's managing director Giovanni Beretta before being escorted to his luxe suite complete with "wide window views of Central Park." The hotel was a favorite of William's late mother Priness Diana during her visits to the States in the '90s.

The Empire State Building's official Twitter handle shared a picture of the iconic Big Apple building, sporting the red, white, and blue of the Union Jack, writing, "We welcome Their #Royal Highnesses The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge by sparkling in red, white, and blue #RoyalVisitUSA."

The pregnant Duchess, whose first-born son George has stayed at home for this visit, had no time to put her feet up after her transatlantic flight. Within the hour, the happy couple had done a full outfit change and emerged from their hotel to take a car to British media and marketing mogul Sir Martin Sorrell's Manhattan apartment for a private event for the American friends of the Royal Foundation.

The Duchess looked radiant in a black, knee-length LBD and black high heels, and paused to wave at the crowds who cheered her departure from the hotel. The royals left the private dinner, hosted by Sorrell's high-powered wife Christiana, at 10.30pm.

After a good night's sleep in the $14,000-a-night hotel, on Monday, Dec. 8 William leaves behind his wife, traveling to Washington, D.C. where he will meet with both President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden at the White House before speaking at the World Bank about illegal wildlife trafficking.

He will then fly back to NYC to attend a Brooklyn Nets basketball game at the Barclays Center. Beyonce and Jay Z are also supposed to attend the Net's face-off against Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers that evening.

Prince William and Princess Kate Have Arrived in New York City
By Simon Perry
• 12/07/2014 AT 05:00 PM EST

They're here!

Prince William and Kate have arrived in New York.

In the most anticipated royal visit since the glory days of Diana, the couple flew in on a scheduled British Airways flight that arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens. They were then whisked to Manhattan, where their first stop was their hotel, the storied Carlyle.

Amid a sea of blue flashing lights, the Big Apple got its first glimpse of the royals as they stepped out of the car at 5:43 p.m. to cheers from about 450 well-wishers and members of the media. An expectant Kate, clad in a plum "Marina" maternity coat by Seraphine, smiled as she made her way into the hotel (which was proudly flying a specially-installed Union Jack flag for the occasion) with her arm around her husband.

"It's good to be here," William told the hotel's managing director Giovanni Beretta, who was standing outside the entrance of the five-star building to greet the couple.

After a brief moment, he and Kate escaped the 35º weather and were escorted straight up to their luxe suite, which a source says has "wide window views of Central Park." The iconic Empire State Building was lit up in red, white and blue in honor of their arrival.

Security at the Carlyle has been tight since the start of the day, with communal areas and hallways swept by security several times throughout the afternoon.

"They are being extra careful," a staffer said. "Even during the Met Gala security isn't this tight."

The pair have since headed to a dinner for fundraisers of their Royal Foundation at the Gramercy home of advertising boss Sir Martin Sorrell. Kate, in a short black cocktail dress, smiled for the cameras as she arrived.

Guests of the swanky dinner may "decide to make a charitable donation, should they wish," a royal source tells PEOPLE, denying reports that tickets for access cost up to $50,000.

Earlier, as anticipation built in New York, British Consul General Danny Lopez told the press early Sunday, "It's been incredible to witness the level of excitement from people wanting to be part of it, wanting to attend, wanting to help us and support us.”

"The level of excitement in New York has been absolutely phenomenal."

Sir Peter Westmacott, the British ambassador to the United States, explained, "It's the latest embodiment of the lasting and very close relationship with the royal family."

"It's important to us to ensure they have a good time. We hope this will be a very satisfactory happy fun visit."

The action-packed trip will see William head to Washington, D.C., where he'll meet President Barack Obama, who Friday underlined his support for the prince's campaign against illegal wildlife trade.

Meanwhile, Kate will spend Monday in New York, including supporting kids with mental health needs by visiting a child development center in Harlem with the city's first lady Chirlane McCray.

Monday evening, the sports-loving couple will check out basketball at the Barclays Center, where the Brooklyn Nets take on the Cleveland Cavaliers. The NBA has signed on as a supporter of William's United for Wildlife campaign.

The visit ends with a glittery evening gala supporting the college where the two met and fell in love, St. Andrews in Scotland. The benefit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art will have some A-list guests including Tom Hanks, whose daughter attended the institution.

William told guests that the university still has a special place in his and his wife’s hearts, saying: ‘I don’t need to tell you how much St Andrews means to me and Catherine.’ He added: ‘By joining us here this evening you are supporting a remarkable independent institution.’ Turning to the principal, Louise Richardson, he went on: ‘It goes without saying to those in this room that the education we received there was first class.’Louise, you may need to close your ears at this point but it’s often said by the undergraduates of St Andrews that you leave the university in either one of two states: either married or an alcoholic.Fortunately for Catherine and me we ended up married. But for those of you who are parents of undergraduates right now, I give you one tip: ask your son or daughter over the holidays if they know what Ma Bells is. If they answer yes, perhaps remove their wine glasses out of reach.’
