"Fringe" had many shocking moments and one of the many that nobody saw coming was the horrifying realization that a shapeshifter had taken the place of Charlie Francis in the September 17, 2009 second season opener 'A New Day in the Old Town' (I kept hoping that somehow Charlie's personality and memories would overtake the shapeshifter's).




The suspense built throughout S2-EP2 'Night Of Desirable Objects' and S2-EP3 'Fracture', culminating in the October 8, 2009 S2-EP4 'Momentum Deferred', as we knew what the FBI Fringe Division did not - that Agent Charlie Francis was a shapeshifter and not the man they knew - up until the final awareness and showdown between Olivia and shapeshifter Charlie.




Oh well, at least we still had alt-Charlie Francis!

That was one of the hardest character changes to take. It was worse in many ways than an outright character death. To see Charlie change from the lovable guy he was to an incredibly evil character - even realizing it wasn't him - was just so difficult.

Notice Charlie Francis's tombstone reads the date of his death as October 8, 2009, the same date S2-EP4 'Momentum Deferred' aired on FOX in which Olivia killed him as a shape shifter.

Suffering from memory loss and disoriented, Emily Kramer enters Holly's Diner in Milford, Massachusetts in S1-EP6 "The Cure" that originally aired on October 21, 2008. The young counter employee, who is concerned about her well-being, offers her some soup and asks another person to notify Marty, a Milford police officer.

When Marty asks her what's wrong, she responds that 'they' (INtREPUS Pharmaceuticals researchers) took her, and gave her a red medicine, and then a blue one. Convinced the woman needs psychiatric help, Marty attempts to restrain her, but this only agitates her more. And as Emily tries to break free, everyone in the diner screams and starts bleeding from their eyes. Soon Emily is bleeding too, crying out in pain. She runs to the door of the diner, where her head explodes, splattering blood against the diner window. GROSS!!!




Let's hope that Emily Kramer, Marty, and all of the employees and patrons of Holly's Diner are doing much better in the alternate universe.
