Book Reviews #3: Opinions are valued

From last thread:

Quote:
I was reading the plot on Goodreads. I don't think it's a book for me.

It's crazy how some people can end up like a Stephen King and make money off publishing and then others need multiple jobs.

And then you wonder what is it that makes someone a Stephen King? What is/are the magic ingredient(s)?

Yes, those magic ingredient(s) are very hard to pinpoint.

I know of a dutch author, only wrote 1 book - an extremely good book - but he sold way too little and never got the chance to write his second...Or at least never got the chance to publish it.
Or he would have to self-publish, but that is financially such a risk, you don't take it.

And then you have authors who literally write 8 books (or even more) a year, all in a same way, according to a specific writing guideline, that is always the same. But they sell like cookies! Go figure!
If you read one, you have read them all...

He needed better promotion. It really does all come down to the marketing.

I wonder if they have ghost writers in order to pump them out.

It is marketing. But also sometimes the masses just like the same old tropes.

And they definitely have ghost writers to pump out books so fast.

People want easy stuff so they don't have to spend so much time on things.

I get that, the easy part.

But if you read books by an author, and it's like book 16 or so, I would like something thrilling and new. Not "ah, yes, pg6 here he introduces the bad guy - pg 20 has the murder - pg 156 gives a sneak peek on who will find out who has done it - pg 252 reveal time"

I really like a book where it's the last chapter and you find yourself saying "Damn, didn't see that one coming AT ALL" followed by "Damn, it's the last chapter, what next?!" slowly feeling the black hole closing in on you
(that last part probably is a dutch expression translated wrong - I have to brush up on my English idioms, sorry )

I think romance books follow that formula a lot of the time. And sometimes I don't mind that fluff at all, so I don't want to come across as knocking them.

This is a cool saying. I can't think of what the closest American thing would be, but I get its meaning.

I felt that way with Golden Son by Pierce Brown.

Mysteries too.

A cliché trope is okay once in a while. But every single book you read?

He's good at the cliffhangers.

Yea, that gets tiring

TBR piles will never be diminished.

It's a good series. If you like sci-fi, you'll like it.

It's the second book of the Red Rising saga.

The first trilogy is:
1. Red Rising
2. Golden Son
3. Morning Star

Second trilogy 10 years later:
4. Iron Gold
5. Dark Age
6 unnamed, yet to be released.

Totally. Sometimes it's fun to know exactly what you are in for and it's just a feel good kind of book. But it would be incredibly boring to me to mostly read books like that.

Do you think romance tropes make you smile more than mystery/thriller tropes?
