Tangled up between A/W & A/P threads...
Thanks, Will's Girl, for the very well worded and thoughtful reply to my musings about the A/P vs. A/W love scenes. I read both of these threads every day because "I'm conflicted!" like our dear Alicia has been for so long!
I hadn't ever seen CN in anything before TGW, never thought he was actually very good looking, and mostly I have found his character as disagreeable/conceited/untrustworthy as lots of other viewers. Dead Poet's Society, though, has long been one of my favorite movies of all time, I like JC already, and I do think ...as far as Alicia is concerned... he has been portrayed like a moral compass pointing 'true north'. I had never heard of 'shipping' outside of a transportation context til I stumbled, in all my obsessive state, onto this forum and the TGW fan fiction sites. I have, from the beginning of the series, loved the history that A/W have, and the way it informs their modern day work and personal way of relating with each other. I even have Georgetown ff ideas float through my head on a fairly regular basis. I definitely think Alicia has chemistry with Will, and I also attribute that to the rl friendship of JM/JC in some degree at least. JM did, after all, recommend JC for the role! I don't like Peter as they have written him from the beginning (..."then everything can all go back to normal" prison scene--can we say so self-absorbed the guy couldn't be any more clueless???), and I fear they will continue in S3 to make him even darker, etc. He often does come off slimy, and-true confessions-when I saw the bathroom A/P scene I watched it through slits in my fingers via squinted eyes, cringing and shreaking out of awkwardness for them both! It did, to me too, seem to be another example of Peter just expecting something from Alicia...taking something else from her that she wasn't prepared to willingly offer/give him of her own volition. Trapped/panicked were 2 words that came to mind in watching it, and that is why I brought up the question earlier today. All that being said, I have watched the series from the beginning with the hope, however naively, that the writers would do something that seems more original for me in tv land...show the good, the bad, the ugly, and then eventually the good again between this couple...i.e. restore the marriage. Maybe that is a function of my age (30s). Maybe it's me returning to more traditional values or whatever. Maybe it's just my overly romantic heart... It truly has nothing to do with Peter as he has been in the past, or even currently is, and more to do with my wish to see a really transformed couple. I want to believe Alicia can come out of this knowing herself better, owning her own mistakes/share in the breakdown of their relationship over the years, and being true to herself in a way that she allowed to slip away/be diminished in the past. I want to believe that Peter can truly move beyond the narcissism, appreciate his wife for all she is, own up to egregious faults that led them to this messy painful place, and I want him to honestly choose to be a better human being and husband...not just a better SA... :: (As an aside there is a fan fic of the aforementioned scene that paints Peter much more as I wish his character really was, so I live in hopes that maybe he eventually will be... In any case I hold no ill will towards A/W either (though I think their timing will bite them in the backside mightily come S3). If the men must remain essentially the same in terms of character, then by all measures Will comes out ahead of Peter regarding Alicia probably all counts. Where wishes and dreams prevail, I still want Peter the toad to turn into Peter the prince so that this couple who've had so much bad between them can enjoy a happily ever after... Can we still be friends??? |

goodwifefan, thanks for the kind words and of course we can still be friends! People having different opinions is what makes life interesting. I loved reading your comments and frankly I agree with a lot of them. I read both threads everyday, too, although I don't post too much in the A/P thread. I get where you're coming from regarding seeing P/A work through their problems and find each other again. I actually think that's what the Kings had in mind, but I think not getting CN to commit to a more regular presence on the show forced them to take the show in another direction. To their credit, I think plan B has worked out nicely as well. I think they do a good job of keeping us interested, with a few rocky patches along the way. Seeing Peter make that journey and become a better person would certainly have been interesting television. @ your reaction to the bathroom scene. yeah, that was pretty hairy to watch, tbh! Yikes! I think the writers kinda wanted that reaction from fans though. We experience the show through Alicia's eyes, so I think they wanted us to feel as uncomfortable as she did in that scene and they did a great job of it! Peter is certainly a very flawed character and it doesn't seem as though anything that has happened to him thus far has been to help him to improve his character. After everything he's lost, he still seems pretty clueless where Alicia is concerned as you stated in your post. Maybe that's the writers choosing to go a different direction with the show. He certainly is a compelling character to watch and Noth was an excellent choice to play that role. He does a great job with his character. Tbh, I'm rather afraid for W/A next season. I think Peter's out for blood! I too think they are going to pay dearly for their stolen hour of bliss! Should be fun to watch! I hope they don't make his character too dark, though! I like characters with a little more ambiguity to them. Makes them less predictable. Quote:

TFTNT Euge, can you add the quotes from the last two episodes into the OP as well, please?
Quote:
My first introduction to JC was Sports Night! My love for Danny Rydell knows no bounds! I even sat through SWAT for the guy . Just as CN brings the charm in Peter gorgeously, JC plays the moral ambiguity in Will with the same deadliness that I buy! He plays it in such a way that you understand his reasons for his decision. But again like, JC maganges to bring to his character all the qualities we like in Will so much as well. Quote:

As for why I prefer A/W to A/P, along with all the reasons mentioned already, there's a possibility for A and Will to be truly happy, something I don't think A/P can achieve anymore. I wouldn't mind Alicia alone, as long as she's happy, so am I. At the end of the day, this is her story. But Will's in love with her, and he has the ability to put Alicia before himself. He may not always be able to put her before the job, it's not conducive to their relationship, but he's already shown the ability to put her needs above his. To be happy for her, even when it hurts him. This is something I don't see in Peter. __________________

I do not, at all, mean to imply that Alicia is responsible for Peter's terrible choices in having affairs. He is responsible for those horrible decisions/actions, but they all suffer the consequences. I am simply saying that any relationship requires/involves more than one person. Initially it was easier for her to act like their marriage broke down solely because of Peter's affairs, i.e. everything was his fault, but it seems like she is starting to acknowledge, with more distance, that it maybe wasn't so great before he actually strayed. I think the affairs were both a massive problem in and of themselves and a symptom of the bigger problems between them in terms of their communication breakdown, living like co-parent housemates vs lovers/partners/friends, etc. I am looking forward to our "Saint" Alicia continuing to see glimpses of, embracing, and growing from her own imperfections...seeing herself as a player in her relationships vs solely reacting to them from the 'victim' stance. Even as she said to Kalinda once about "I have to stop letting life just happen, don't I?" or similar. Does any of this make sense? Ok...so long. ::slinking back under my rock:: Promise I will try to be less long winded in the future...try. |

Such great discussion all around. I wish I could fast forward 15 days and have all the time in the world to reply to everything being said here. Apparently, I have amazing self-restraint though.
Thanks for the new thread Eug. The last one didn't prove to be bad luck for us after all. __________________

I don't know what the writers complete vision for this show is, are the wanting to tell a story that truly mirrors real life political marriages or break some ground? If it's to truly mirror real life than Alicia will stay married to Peter forever or until he does something that starts another scandal and forces her to choose out. If it's ground breaking they are after then perhaps Alicia's journey inspire some women to be stronger and independent of their horrible husbands.
I've always felt the writers were telling an Alicia storyline first & then a Will & Alicia story 2nd. But that Will & Alicia were this love story she earned & deserved, her happy ending. What I don't want to see is 3rd party enter & show interest in Alicia. I'd rather her return to Peter than have that happen. Mostly I want to see the outcome be about two lost people who are brought together by circumstance & somehow help & encourage the other to become whole again & then as a result of that the decide to tackle a life with the other. Alicia took all of herself & put it into her family, her marriage & her husband's career. She didn't set aside anything for her or her career. Vs Will who made it all about career and gave up any personal life or important lasting relationship. I'd love to see W & A swap focus. |
