Tube Talk's Top 25 Shows of 2012: 5-1
Published Monday, Dec 17 2012, 08:00 GMT | By Alex Fletcher and Morgan Jeffery |31 comments

It's the moment you've all been waiting for, an event more exciting than Christmas Day itself, we finally present to you the Tube Talk Top 5 TV shows of 2012.

For once, the whole Digital Spy team were agreed on what should make the No.1 spot, but what do you think? Keep reading to find out what made the Top 5.

5. Mad Men
Roger on drugs. Peggy quitting. Joan forced to 'take one for the team'. Don slowly slipping back to his old ways. Pete having a crazy affair. A major character killing themself. And people say nothing ever happens in Mad Men!

Slicker than a Savile Row suit and tastier than a fine Bourbon whiskey, the '60s ad agency drama remains a flagship representation of TV's current Golden Age.

Back after an extended hiatus, Mad Men's fifth season was as utterly stunning and super cool as the four previous runs. Christina Hendricks came to the fore with some stunning performances and to say we can't wait to find out what happens in the final seasons six and seven would be putting it mildly. [AF]

4. Homeland
Homeland was our number one show last year, and though it might have slipped a few places, its second season is still one of the most wildly entertaining things on television. Yes, there are plenty of complaints about believability and suggestions that it's all gone a bit 24, but it's still been a great ride - and the first few episodes in particular delivered so many twists we got whiplash.

The cast of characters are all entertaining - we have special places in our hearts for Saul and Virgil - and even when the show grasps at the absurd, it's great fun. Look at that Saturday Night Live sketch, or the video of Brody's heavy breathing (once you've seen this, you will never look at the show the same way again.) It might not be as deep or political as the first season, but Homeland continues to employ some brilliant acting, and one thing's for sure - it's never boring. [CW]

3. The Thick of It
Knowing when to end a show is one of the most difficult things for TV writers and stars, but Armando Iannucci got it just right with this fourth and final series of The Thick Of It.

The political satire remained razor sharp, Malcolm Tucker remains one of the most incredible TV creations of all time ("You don't know Jackie ********** Chan about me") and the penultimate Goolding Inquiry episode - which couldn't have been any more timely - was a brave and bold twist to the show's magic formula, which paid off brilliantly.

We'll keep our fingers crossed that Tucker may return for one (or two) final specials in years to come, but if this really is the end, then what a stunning way to bow out. [AF]

2. The Walking Dead
The third season has been nothing short of fantastic, and while it's true that one can credit this to the fast-paced action and the hefty zombie kill count that continues to rack up, for us these episodes shocked and thrilled because they showed that humans are just as, if not, more dangerous than the undead.

Woodbury and the Governor are the obvious examples, but some of the new prisoners we met early on and even Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes provided plenty of tension as it was unclear what they were capable of. And let's not forget Shane last season, who became darker and more aggressive - uncontrollably so before he was put down by Rick. In fact, the back half of season two - including the farm finale - was consistently ace.

With casualties also including Lori, the show continues to stress that this is a bleak and depressing universe where everyone will inevitably bite it. We could barely ask any more from the exec producers - they even made Carl a badass. [BL]

1. Sherlock
2012 was pretty much sewn up from day one. Yes, Sherlock tops our top 25 list for the very first time - the first series having come second to The Walking Dead in 2010. 'A Scandal in Belgravia' may have aired on January 1 - when most of us were still recovering from our New Year's hangovers - but it remained one of the best pieces of drama to air on either UK or US television all year.

Visually lush, action-packed and romantic, we were sure Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and their team couldn't possibly top such a superb premiere, but how wrong we were. 'The Reichenbach Fall' just blew us away.

We'll admit to initially misjudging Andrew Scott's Moriarty - we thought the character a camp buffoon, devoid of menace. Again, we were happily proven wrong - Scott delivered a wonderfully unhinged yet layered performance in what was presumably his Sherlock swansong.

As Sherlock Holmes himself, Benedict Cumberbatch remained as dashing and dynamic a lead as any television drama could hope to have and, in those final moments at his friend's graveside, Martin Freeman broke our hearts as the bereft John Watson.

No show in 2012 quite captured both the attention of critics and the public imagination like Sherlock - don't pretend you haven't speculated on how our hero might have survived. If, as the latest rumours suggest, we won't be getting new episodes until late 2013, then it's going to be a very long, very painful wait. [MJ]
