That's great! I haven't heard of her either, but that's a good thing that Disney are casting an unknown in the title role. I still think they should slow down on the live action remakes, but there we go.

I remember reading nightmare rumors about the live-action Mulan casting. I'm starting to feel better about this film now that the title character has been cast and she's actually Chinese.

I think I remember reading somewhere they were having a lot of trouble finding the perfect actor to portray Mulan, and that perhaps it could have been someone who would not fit the role at all, or someone too famous...

There was one story that Mulan would not even be about Mulan but about a male hero as the lead, and Mulan would be the damsel in distress. Shang could be a white guy. Because Hollywood has been known to cast white guys in Asian roles. Those are just two examples I can think of.

Well I don't know how many ''white guys'' have been cast for Asian roles, but I remember this was a big deal made my some that Scarlet Johansson got the role for ''Ghost in the Shell'' which is a Japanese character.

White washing is a common occurrence in Hollywood so I definitely breathed a sigh of relief when I learned Mulan would be played by a Chinese actress.

Did you have anyone you wanted for that role? I don't know of many Chinese actors. I know Jamie Chung & Maggie Q. Not many others that are women.

I didn't have anyone in mind, no! But I'm happy with who was chosen Not that I know much about her

OK. Well, I saw ''Mulan'' earlier today & it was good enough. It certainly broke stereotypes such as the cross-dressing. I give Mulan credit though, she tried posing as a man longer than I'd consider do the same as a woman. Of course she ended up getting found out & people weren't too thrilled with her. Most of the male characters though were portrayed for whatever reasons as buffoons, with some exceptions such as the Emperor. Shan Yu was a terrific villain.

I think, given some of the subject matter was pretty intense, that they were simply the comedic relief needed to keep things from getting too dark.
