You did, Mel.

Ennis' love for Jack lasted for decades and even after his death.

I found this review of the short story. I love what is says. The last part makes me sad.

Quote:
This is not a gay cowboy love story. Whilst love is a theme, and it is a grand, powerful love, at its heart Brokeback Mountain is a tragedy about the damage repressed sexuality can cause, not just to the two lovers, but to their families too. Ennis goes through life keeping people, including his soon ex-wife Alma and his two daughters, all at a distance, and even Jack, who gets closer than most, is held at arms length.

Ennis is fundamentally homophobic. He isn't bigoted, but he has no way of understanding what it means to be gay, no frame of reference on how to live a life like that knowing only the American West's hand-me-down definition of a man as a tight-lipped red-blooded cowboy, and as such he confines his sexuality to Brokeback, to the mountain where his love first emerged, and there it stays, isolated, lonely, and hardly ever spoken of.

More here.

That's why I love this movie. It's so real and heartbreaking.

And they were right, I think, about Ennis keeping Jack in arms length. He let him in more then most but not truly all the way.

That is an amazing review..but so sad.

The fight at the end...Ennis kept him at arms length for 20 years...and Jack accepted it because he knew that was the only way he could have Ennis...even though he wanted soo much more of a life with the man.

Damn..I'm going to have to watch this soon.

Exactly, you guys. You two, and that reviewer, said it best.

And this quote...

Quote:
"Tell you what, we coulda had a good life together, [censored] real good life! Had us a place of our own. But you didn't want it, Ennis! So what we got now is Brokeback Mountain! Everything's built on that, that's all we got boy, [censored] all. So I hope you know that, if you don't never know the rest!"

Ah that quote. Just prooves that jack has given so much of himself over to Ennis and its just breaking him down.

What he says after is even more heartbreaking. About the short leash Ennis keeps him on...

It's this kind of angst, the culmination of everything, that makes this scene number one for me.

Quote:
You count the damn few times we have been together in nearly twenty years and you measure the short [censored] leash you keep me on, and then you ask me about Mexico and tell me you'll kill me for needing somethin' I don't hardly never get. You have no idea how bad it gets!

I love those quotes so much. That scene is one of my favorites. And I always loved that during the awards show that Jake was nominated for...they used that scene.

ETA - looking for something on photobucket and saw this

Made a looong time ago

Love that bit Jas. Jack is so so right. I dont like what he did in Mexico or does there but I dont think Ennis has the right to be mad about it or whatever.

Love those Jenn!

I didn't know that. It's a great scene to showcase.

He was being irrational but his feelings were stronger than his brain functions at that moment.

Agreed.

Love the pic (new to me, I think) and art, Jenn! My favorite scene. I love the dialogue.

Ennis really needed to break down like that. It's not good to bottle it all up.
