I found the first season a bit dark, but I suppose that made sense while the crew was coming to grips with being so far from home and trying to get the Starfleet and Maquis crews integrated.

In rewatches I tend to skip over the first season. Maybe I should give it another try.

Some episodes of Season 2 are boring IMO and for me personally the show got better when Seven of Nine came along.

I think they did more with Seven's character development and interactions with others than they ever did with Kes

Yeah, first I thought they only cast her for her looks, but they wrote her stories very well and her acting was terrific.
