That's just it, they treated him like an experienced officer and not some trainee ensign. I suppose knowing that you had the respect of your peers was something.

That's right.

And, in a total opposite move, in Deep Space Nine, Nog starts working on Deep Space Nine as a full ensign after only a year (or two?) at the academy -- and then becomes lieutenant junior grade by the finale (and he never graduated from the academy, as far as I remember. Or it's never mentioned that he was in accelerated program and graduated).

Good point about Nog. While we know that he attended Starfleet Academy, I don't remember anything about him graduating. Although there was a war on in his storyline, and that does tend to accelerate possibilities of promotion.

Yes, special circumstances.

Nice set! It would have been interesting to see the Kes & B'Elanna friendship developed a bit more.

I agree. The relationship between Seven and Janeway was more mentor than friendship. And most of B'Elanna's free time was spent with Tom

You may be right. I enjoyed seeing B'Elanna & Tom's relationship develop and grow, but the writers had time to maintain Tom's friendship with Harry, so it would have been nice to have some female friendships for B'Elanna.
