I used to wonder why they paired these two, but I keep thinking it might be that, I mean even in the original series (to me anyway) Uhura was never afraid to tell Spock what was on her mind.

Trek has a good history of having strong female characters. Although costuming does like to accentuate their physical assets.

I love that Uhura isn't afraid to speak her mind
I think a lot of people would feel intimidated by Spock because he's a vulcan but it seems that in their relationship she's the one wearing the pants and he's whipped

eta: looking at the pics, he really did look worried when Uhura went talking with the bad guys alone
reminds me of the beginning when she was worried for him when he went in that volcano
