That's true. He didn't really understand them, but part of that was probably that he'd been on his own for so long. Hadn't thought of it that way until you mentioned it.

Odo knew he cared deeply for Kira, but he didn't understand the context of those feelings until he had started interacting with Jadzia, and Sisko, and Bashier, and O'brien. Then, when he thought he was ready to admit how he feels, Kira reveals she's in a relationship with Shakaar.

I'm happy Kira and Odo got together when they did because they were both ready.
