I do think Brian changed his outlook on love, gradually. When S5 ends, he's made so many step forwards to an idea of love that is nothing like what his parents taught him. I think though there's still some road ahead of him to believe in the happy ending, to accept he deserves love just as much as everyone else. I think it's back and forth for him, through the entire show: there are moments in which you see he's almost totally embraced love, and then there are moments in which the doubts come back up. I think it's a difficult change to make, one that needs time. I believe the longer he was with Justin, the more he believed in love, because sometimes, with things that aren't really tangible like with love, you need the confirmation of their existance day after day, the confirmation that it can last. I think Brian needed that, a lot.
I also agree that Brian did get love, from Michael and Debbie and later Lindsay. But I also think that some damage was already done, because he was already 14 when he met them. What happens to you when you're a child, has a deep impact on you as an adult, I believe. But I also totally believe that finding Michael and Debbie and later Lindsay, helped him keep a part of his heart open enough for Justin to break through. What you said in the second part of your post, I agree with some of that: I think Brian taught Justin some things, mostly about being gay, but Justin was as much of a teacher to Brian too. And some things they learnt together. I'm not sure about Justin not hiding to be gay. He tried, in the beginning. Jennifer realized he was and when she confronted him, he had no choice but to admit it. But at first, he didn't want to tell his parents either. I do think though that he wouldn't have lasted long in hiding it, because he was strongly determined to be who he was, as the whole situation with Chris and the school proves. I also think though that's it's not entirely fair to compare the situation Justin had and the one Brian had, because their families were different. I think it was less hard to admit to Jennifer to be gay than to Joan. And while Justin had some intuition that Craig wouldn't take things well, I think Brian was sure nothing good would come out from Jack knowing about him being gay. __________________

I love what you said about Brian needing confirmation that love actually existed. I can't agree more that being with Justin helped him confirm that even more each time, despite all the obstacles they faced along the way.

So, I agree with Manu that when Brian met Michael (and Debbie) the damage was already done. And I don't think that Debbie just saw Brian and loved him immediately. Through the time she learned to love him, and she realized he's damaged and yes, I think she tried to "save" him as good as possible.
And yes, thank god Brian had Michael and Debbie and later Lindsay in his life.  I think it helped to not cause even more damage because of Joan and Jack.__________________

 Of course, I think it's also fair to say that not everything Brian did or felt was caused by his family, because not everyone comes from a difficult past and grows the same way, some people manage to get out of certain cycles of hate/lack of love better than others. P.S. I love Brian&Justin so much I chose their thread to post my 100,000th post  You think Brian would get a kick out of it? Or just laugh at me? Probably the second __________________

Steffi basically explained what I think too.
Brian and Justin's situation, let's say when they were both 17, was not the same. Brian's parents were nothing like Justin's. If Justin was afraid to come out as gay to two parents who had been loving parents untill that moment, of course for Brian it was even more difficult to come out to two parents who had been hateful his whole life. That is why I say it's not fair to make a comparison between them and their decision to come out or not. And as I said in my previous post, Justin didn't actually choose to come out, it was Jennifer who forced him to when she asked him about Brian. We don't know if and when Justin would have come out otherwise. Quote:
