Maybe that's also the reason why Ron never really thought of anything between them in the earlier books or not have acted out of his feelings? I mean Ron is still Ron and he's clueless as always but I don't think he ever really believed that Hermione would like him back especially after Krum who's definitely not like him.

At first Ron indeed was clueless but later in GOF specifically he realized that there is something else, in Half-Blood Prince he became so sure he has feelings for her; strong feelings. ALSO, he quite knows the fact that Hermione is brilliant and already boys like Krum began to notice her as a female as for sure she would pick one of those instead of poor loser red-haired boy with such large family and no talents except he's the side kick of famous Potter. Because of that we see him a bit aggressive sometimes and jealous. Poor Ron I really feel for him. Thanks God Hermione did feel for him too

Yeah I think it was HBP where they both have strong feelings for each other but they haven't acted out on those feelings yet. Ron was frustrating in GOF especially the Yule Ball. He was in denial of his feelings back then.
