This is what the chapter is about. I think this was in the movie...

Harry found the locket in the cave after Dumbledore drank all the "water". It was a Horcrux but he had no idea how to destroy it. They took turns wearing it but it had the worst effect on Ron.

Because the Gryffindor sword appeared for him so that's how he knew he needs to use the sword to destroy the locket.
