Love of beauty is often denigrated as frivolous, shallow, even wickedly self-indulgent. How can you stop and smell the roses when there is so much to do, when there is such ugliness in the world, when you could be doing something about that instead? Where do you get off enjoying yourself this much?! 😠

I still encounter these thoughts in my own head, the judgement of sensory pleasures but I don’t let them dictate my day because this perspective is all tied up in the meritocracy, the belief that our worth can be measured by our productivity - a system that has not served my growth. The truth is beauty lifts my spirits like nothing else. And fighting all the ugliness in life is not worth it if I don’t enjoy its beauty.⁣

There is something very loving and very defiant about making the time each day to sit with my pots and brushes and to enjoy my beauty. It’s a moment every day to be with my body and go ‘I see you, I like you’. In defiance of all the thoughts that say to cover up, hide, be ashamed to be a body, or that you must do more before you let yourself enjoy life. Beauty is my daily self-acceptance practice.⁣
