It wasn't a mistake per se but Snape did choose to be a Death Eater or he can just be bitter and stop avoiding Lily & the Marauders. He was an angry young adult back then so his choice was to be a Death Eater.

Because some fans think it was a mistake for Snape to be Death Eater when he could have avoided joining them. I do think if he did avoid joining them, he'd be miserable forever and his relationship with Lily will still be strained.

And also the only friend he has was Lily but he lost her so being with Death Eaters, he has some "friends" he can rely on.

Yeah he only trusts Lily and no one else. He may be a Death Eater but his loyalty is to Lily, even after her death.
