Snape was there to check on her and also because Dumbledore got word of what happened at the Potters.

Here's what happened:

When Snape found out that Voldemort had decided to eliminate the Potter child, he begged his master to spare the boy's mother, Lily Potter.

Snape found out that Voldemort's target was Harry but begged Voldemort to spare Lily. By the time he found Lily dead, he made that pact with Dumbledore to protect Harry because of his love for Lily.

Yep he couldn't. And I think Lily's death was what fueled Snape to go against Voldemort while still being a Death Eater.

He begged Voldemort to spare Lilly's life and yet he still killed her so yeah, in the end Voldemort killed him and I think he's fine with that.

I think Snape did all of that to get justice for Lily (and in effect for Harry as well).
