Most likely Newt tried but Jacob wasn't budging so he asked Hicks to do it instead.

Yeah he's seen A LOT. He's new to this whole wizarding world and for that to happen to Queenie, it would really affect him.

Yes that's precisely why he distanced himself from Newt and the others. Magic is good and can be fun but he also saw the horrors of it.

It's a very understandable reaction from a no maj/muggle like him so I don't blame Jacob for distancing himself from all of it for a while.

Everyone else has magic except Jacob. And also I wonder if he's got any close family friend or even muggle friends? We know very little about Jacob's life.
