I'm guessing it's because Alfie probably only committed to do 3 years on the show. I noticed that with British actors, they don't like staying on a TV show for very long. They prefer to do movies and plays. So I guess their only option was to kill off Wes. How they did it was of course the questionable part because Wes died horribly and he didn't deserve that.

Yeah they're used to the fast shooting schedule in the UK since most UK TV shows only have 13 eps (or for sitcoms 6 eps only). And they very rarely stay on in a show for very long. With the exception of Doctor Who (whose lead changes every 3 years), they don't have a show as long as Supernatural or Grey's Anatomy.
