I'm guessing it's because Alfie probably only committed to do 3 years on the show. I noticed that with British actors, they don't like staying on a TV show for very long. They prefer to do movies and plays. So I guess their only option was to kill off Wes. How they did it was of course the questionable part because Wes died horribly and he didn't deserve that. :(

Yeah they're used to the fast shooting schedule in the UK since most UK TV shows only have 13 eps (or for sitcoms 6 eps only). And they very rarely stay on in a show for very long. With the exception of Doctor Who (whose lead changes every 3 years), they don't have a show as long as Supernatural or Grey's Anatomy.
