I'll assume they met at the Ministry where they both work but Leta would surely know Theseus is Newt's brother.

Yeah because I'm assuming Newt & Theseus are close. So by the time Leta & Theseus met, they already know each other.

At first it looks to me like the Bowtruckle is useless but it helped Tina escape and is very loyal to Newt.
