We had something similar to Whacking Day back in college. It was during the weeks leading up to St. Pat's. Freshman guys, especially the guys in frats, would carry their hand carved shillelaghs around campus. If a St. Pat's Board Member saw them, they could throw a rubber snake in front of them and make them kill it. They'd proceed to swing their shillelagh downward at the snake then bite its head off.

Aren't both events, Whacking Day and Cyn's college ritual based on St. Patrick's Day? Or am I getting it mixed up with something else?

Well, Whacking Day was to drive the snakes out of Springfield. And supposedly St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. But I don't think there is a direct correlation between Whacking Day and St. Pat's Day.

They probably got the idea from St. Patrick's Day, but you're right there's not direct correlation.
