We talked about it before, how Spike was great bc he wasn't planned to be

bc Joss liked him so little that he didn't protect him from anything. Dawn, I think he cared too much about. Or at least, like you said, he tried too hard with her, so that it didn't feel real.

Exactly.

Every artist has to be careful of that. It's a common mistake to make. You don't want to really try with anything. You don't want to recreate something you did. If it worked in that moment, it's because else worked with it. You can't force those same "ingredients" again. They're not going to be there. And, like you said, in this case, he didn't like Spike too much at the time. So, he didn't protect him. But, you know, it's part of that batch of ingredients. They were too different with Dawn, because it's always different with every character.

exactly. Art is about creating something new, something in tune with the time and situation, in all its twists and nuances. Something spontaneous and heartfelt. Reproduction and planned manipulation of emotions is the death of art, and the birth of kitsch.

I was reading back on the thread how James's song was about some of the personal issues. If I'd been Michelle, I'd probably feel mortified to be in the same situation.

I always did love my season 5 Spike and Dawn.

Oh, and very wise observation about how Spike got to grow as a character because he wasn't protected from anything. Some authors say "Kill your darlings" and that's one example of it.

Lastly, Callace would you update the thread link in the board guide? It still goes to thread #4, and that's why it took me a while to find this thread. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I can only imagine it must be a mess for her

I dont know how serious her condition was, but knowing what an effect he can have on women, I can imagine she could have got it hard

And then have to behave professionally through it...

that is part of what made Spike exceptional

(and perhaps part of what made Dawn not so much...

Bc he was never a darling, they took the liberty to really mess with him... which only added to his tons of adorableness

I've read, however that they tried to give that same underdog /outcast glow to her, but couldn't bc they cared about her too much, and she got too protected.

Yeah, so I've heard. That they wanted her to be the weaker, younger sister, who had to work hard to get attention and a position in the gang.

She was

I liked her too. But there was not as many times they were getting her all screwed up so that we could feel sorry for her. She wasn't quite as 'hung out to dry'
