Yeah Tenzin's a tough teacher! I kind of get why Korra didn't like training with him very much.

Yeah I do think that method works sometimes. It worked really well on the lemurs

Korra didn't really respond to it at first.

I watched the next episode and it's both surprising, and sad, that no matter what Tenzin does he simply can't connect to the spiritual world.

He definitely felt like he was letting Aang down by not being able to visit

He does seem to be so knowledgeable about the spirit world so it does seem kind of surprising!
