And I think age has got to do with it as well. Abby's approaching her 40s, IIRC, while Neela's still in her early-mid 30s, I think. In that sense, Abby had more experience, and it shows.

It's what I like most about their friendship, and I think I wrote something about it for our 150k description thingys. Their friendship feels real, and by that I mean that at times they are distant and not really communicating because they do have such different lives and such different experiences. Neela came into Abby's life at a time when she was getting back into medicine, and then Neela watched her become a great doctor & happy wife/mother. Neela had never seen her at her worst, so for Abby, she maybe felt like she couldn't go to her with her problems. It's not like Kerry was still around, someone who Abby literally said had seen her at her best and at her worst.

Now I'm rambling too.

I don't know that Abby is so much pushing her to be with Ray as she's pushing her to stop being so freaking indecisive. Back to s11, she's sort of been calling Neela out on that, from her glorious stint as a Jumbo Mart employee to that phone call. Abby finally has the wisdom and self-awareness to realize that you have to, ahem, "dive into the ocean."

That wedding flashback during the name tag scene had me crying like a baby!
It was so nice to see them talking over the phone, implying they have been calling each other on a regular basis (probably) ever since Abby left.
That phone call reminded me of that!! And of all the times Neela was unsure of herself and Abby was there to push her a little.

Abby: I'm hanging up, now.
Neela: Okay.
Abby: ...
Neela: You're still there?
Abby: Yes.
